The hotel is extremely well located being on a short walk from Exeter cathederal and city centre shopping. The hotel is easy to get to in a car and has plenty of parking. Rooms are large and comfortable. Found the staff very helpful and friendly. Reasonable bar area and a nice, if not a bit expensive restaurant.

Dear Guest
Thank you for leaving a review regarding your recent stay at Mercure Southgate. I'm sorry to learn that you found the restaurant to be too expensive and wonder if you were made aware of our Daily menu which is £15 for 2 Courses or £18 for 3 Courses. I'll certainly make sure this is more prominently displayed.
Thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff - I know they will be delighted to learn they were appreciated.
Kind regards Fiona Darde

Well worth a visit if you have a weekend break planned, as you can easily walk to the Cathedral, old town and shops from here. Also, ideally located if you wanted a break in Exmouth and Dawlish but wanted somewhere a little more plush to stay and wanted to be in town. Great place to stay if you are on business in Exeter.

We normally have an overnight stay here en route to Cornwall and always enjoy it; we have stayed many times now and never had any bad experiences or problems. Lovely rooms, restaurant and food, great swimming pool and gym area; really can't fault it. Last stayed in September 2012.

Absolutely impressed with the hotel and staff. We had a few 'niggles' however these were ironed out effectively and swiftly. The staff at the hotel are, in our opinion, superb! Courteous, polite and very helpful - nothing was ever a problem. We arrived on Easter Friday to a fast check in and went straight to our room which was on the third floor - we later found out - had recently been refurbished. All the refurbished rooms are tastefully decorated and even have Nespresso coffee machines in them. We were travelling with our 2.5 year old daughter so the sofa bed had been pulled put to accommodate her. As the room didn't have a bath in the bathroom I called down to reception and asked of there were any other rooms with a bath. I was told that they did and we could view the Berkley suite if we wished to transfer to that room. Whilst the suite wasn't nearly as well equipped or decorated as well as our original room, the space the suite provided us as well as the bath (!) and the helpfulness of the girls on reception to move us was really great. The breakfast options are great - lots of variety and the bar friendly. We had friends visit us and one night opted for room service - aside from the annoying 'tray charge' that all hotels charge, the quality and variety of the food was again fantastic. The pool is however looking a little tired as are the changing rooms. The location of the hotel really is in the middle of the city so very accessible. The decor of the hotel is very 'swish' and comfortable. The only issue we did have was that one day housekeeping didn't clean our room even though we had hung the tag in the door asking for it to be cleaned. Reception however quickly sent someone up. Overall it is a clean, good value for money hotel and staff very attentative - we will definitely be staying here again.

Close to Exeter cathedral and a short walk to the quay. Excellent location for a short stay in Exeter. We stayed for one night and were upgraded to a privilege room which was lovely - bath robes & slippers, coffee machine and a bar of chocolate plus soft drinks in the mini bar. Lovely toiletries in the bathroom as well. We chose to eat in the hotel restaurant where the steak was beautifully cooked. Would definately stay again if in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a privilege room for a larger room and the extras. Room 341 was lovely.
