“Style over function”
Reviewed 17 October 2008

I was looking forward to this Hotel in fact chose to vacate a very reasonable hotel to sample it, I was put in a Cathedral view room. It had no shower, not even an overbath shower.

The bath and basin were an object lesson in style over function.

I vacated the hotel and returned to my former place after one night. Not sure in such a historic building injecting "boutique" furniture & sanitaryware works on any level.

Wouldnt return again, but would re visit the restaraunt at any time -excellent food.

Incidentally breakfast is in the Cafe bar next door - why?

When visiting my son at University we stayed at the Abode on Saturday night. Six of us had a meal that evening at the restaurant which was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed, the decor was elegant, service was good and the food including complimentary canapes and coffee sweets were fantastic. Our experience of the hotel was not as comendable. It is an attractive looking hotel and has plenty of old world charm with modern amenities. On arrival, Check-in staff appeared stressed and there was confusion as to whether we could check-in or not. The toilet in our room did not work and although we notified reception about it, it was still not fixed 4 hours later. They moved us to another room but did not offer us an upgrade for the incovenience despite the hotel not being full. In the room, the air conditioning unit was noisy and the very modern shower room was inpractical. The water went everywhere when showering as the shower glass was too small and it was almost impossible to wash your face in the basin due to the size of it and the fact there was a shelf above it obstructing access. However the decor was pleasant, facilities in the room were good and the bed was very comfortable.
We were surprised that breakfast was served at the cafe open to the public rather than the restaurant; On opening the door a dark haired waitress very rudely shouted at us and asked us to go and wait in reception as she didn't have any tables, this happened to us a second time when my partner poked his head in. The same waitress then called us and seemed to be very stressed and hurried around the cafe. It was not a relaxed stress-free breakfast time which is what you would want on a Sunday morning on a weekend away ! The acoustics in the cafe did not help either. There was great hurry to take our order but the delivery of the order wasn't at all quick; it would have been nice to have our tea served before our cooked breakfast and for the cooked breakfast to have come with the toast rather than having to ask for missing items time and time again. We had the scrabbled eggs and salmon. The portions were small and overall although there was a buffet breakfast included in the price it was not worth 13.95.
We would recommend the hotel for its location and its restaurant but staff need to find a way of not showing their stress and I would thoroughly recommend them to start serving their breakfast in the restaurant; I believe from reading one of the reviews that this has happend in the past.

Staying at the abode for a friend wedding, arrived at 11.30 and was pointed to our room. On approaching our room heard a constant noise from something that sounded like an air conditioning unit, we got into our room number 115 to find that the noise got louder. Complained to desk and was moved room to one where you could still hear the noise, not as loud, and was also the size of a large postage stamp. Finally got to sleep. The next night was woken up with staff shouting at each other and then bottles being smashed. All in all not a great place to stay. One plus is its location but I wouldn't stay the hotel ever again.

  • Disliked — Noisy after all you are there to sleep

Abode, in our opinion, is the best located hotel in Exeter with absolutely stunning views, as long as you request a cathedral view room!

We selected an "enviable" graded room which was a good size and had an amazing roll top bath and seperate walk in shower.

We were disappointed to have to eat our breakfast in the Cafe, which is open to the public, when you're paying top price you expect to be able to use the hotel facilities.

Staff were cool and remote, but efficient.

This hotel is centrally located so within very easy walking distance of shops/cafes/restaurants etc. but suffers from no parking.

I travelled to Exeter on business and stayed at the Abode from Aug 17-28th.

I truly enjoyed my stay and really felt it was a great home away from home. The front desk staff, Zoe in particular were always friendly and helpful. The brekfast crew at the cafe were also very nice.

I stayed in a comfortable room not wanting to pay to upgrade, and it was fine. My only complaint was my teeny tiny sink... a don't think a bird could bath in there. Otherwise, it was a fine room.

I would definitely go back to Exeter and the Abode would be my first choice for accomodations.

  • Disliked — Itsy bitsy sink in hotel room bathroom

Initial arrival was marred a little by the fact that the booking, made on the Abode corporate website, had translated from two rooms to one. The staff however, were great, and rectified this without fuss, giving my collegue a free upgrade.
The hotel itself has someting of a dual character, one old world Hotel Clarence, and a newer, trying just a little too hard to be funky, Abode Hotel.
Standard rooms were exellent, immaculate, well furmished, but a little small (it is an old building, so fair enough) The better rooms, referred to by the hotel as 'enviable', are absolutely great - well decorated, spotless, big bath, walk in shower and huge bed.
Hotel location is to die for, right in front of Exeter cathedral, in the pedestrianised Cathedral Close.
Being in the city centre, noise was a bit of a problem - the rooms seemed extremely warm, leaving a choice of open windows and lots of street noise, closed windows and a very hot room, or noisy air con.
A bit pricy, but definitely worth a visit if you can afford it (or get the company to pay)

This was my fifth or sixth stay at Abode (aka The Royal Clarence). Business has taken me to Exeter quite a lot over the last few years and a stay at Abode has always been something I looked forward to.

This time I thought the hotel had lost its edge. Why is breakfast no longer served in the restaurant but in the cafe bar? Nothing like as pleasant and relaxing a start to the day as it used to be, I for one object to local commercial radio blasting in my ear. Service was also more than a little haphazard.

The rooms are well appointed if sometimes a little quirky. The rooms at the front have views to fight for (over the cathedral green); those at the back less so!

Car parking is difficult (but this is an old building in the centre of an old city); a valet parking service would make life a lot easier.

Looking to the future of The Royal Clarence, we have every intention to rebuild the hotel with enormous sympathy. The 18th-century hotel, said to be one of the oldest in England, was gutted when a blaze spread from an adjacent building on Friday morning. The fire wrecked the inside of the landmark building and left the frontage on the brink of collapse. ... more   less
