very good all round, well organised, attentive staff, good position, great garden in the heart of the city, good food, rooms decorated well and well supplied with toiletries, refreshments etc.

why almost 'perfick?' dont book rooms facing the road, main route out of town for nighclubbers, noisy on and off til 4am, all credit to the night staff, as they came out from the reception and 'shooed' them on..but also room 12 backs on to the function room, so again if you have an early start you may be irratated by the noise ,although all quiet from musci there after about 1230-1pm. May not affect you if you stay mid week anyway, just bear in mind.

dont take this as an overall negative, as the plusses of St Olaves outweigh this, really intersting and charming hotel with, as I say, some of the nicest staff i have met in hotels.

Room Tip: avoid room 12

We had our wedding breakfast and evening do at this absolutely brilliant hotel on our wedding day, from the moment we booked it from start to finish the manager simon and all his staff all bent over backwards to help us and did everything possible to make our day even more special than it already was- the food for the wedding breakfst was soooooo lovely and we really enjoyed the evening do in the mulberry suite.
The room we had was the suite it was huge and very well appointed with nice little touches.
All in all we were more than satisifed with the hotel and a huge huge huge thank you for simon and all his staff they worked like trojans from start to finish even when we were having a beer in the hotel bar after midnight!

Usually use the Southgate or the Thistle in Exeter for my wife's birthday. This year tried this hotel. we were not disappointed. Friendly and helpful staff do the hotel credit. We were given room 1 a lovely suite and together with the breakfast great value. Parking is not really a problem and the walled garden is delightful although i bet it comes alive in the summer with birdsong. Highly recommended.

Our second visit to St Olaves Court and we were not disappointed. Rooms had been freshly re-decorated and everthing was very clean. Nice toiletries in the bathroom and good shower.
Food was beautifully presented and delicious. Staff were attentive, friendly and polite. We would definitely return. Very close to centre of town for nightlife and shops but nicely tucked away in a pretty little courtyard.

Stayed here in November last year.
Had originally booked the City Gate, just around the corner from St Olaves, but they subsequently contacted me with some cock and bull story about dodgy electrics in the room they had allocated (double-booked!), and to tell me that they had "transferred" me to St Olaves; apparently, there is a degree of "mutual lack of animosity" between the two establishments.
The setting for St Olaves is something of a contradiction: Mary Arches Street is home to a couple of the City's most vibrant bars, and these are patronised with some enthusiasm by the large student population, though there seems to be no hint of trouble or aggressive behaviour.
Walking through the archway into the hotel precinct takes you into a different atmosphere completely, almost as if you have crossed into a parallel universe.
The building is very attarctive, and the "Old Mint" building is also housed within the grounds.
Good start, I thought.
Small reception.
Friendly, small girl on duty at reception.
Small spiral staircase up to my.......VERY small room.
I should have borrowed the hotel cat to see if there was enough room to swing him.
Stain on carpet that really should have been dealt with.
My "significant other" was just waved straight upstairs without having to prove she was here to meet me.
As she entered she said, "Christ! What a tiny room."
I said, "Go home and get the cat; I have a test to perform."
However, the staff are very friendly and the food in the restaurant is good, and not too pricey.
Breakfast is ok.
Overall, I would like to give a higher grade due to the copperation of the staff, but feel the hotel needs a total makeover, maybe with some rooms knocked through to form larger ones.
It is not the cheapest either.
As a postscript to this, it turned out that the bill was £20 more than it would have been at the City Gate.
The City Gate were good enough to refund the difference, so I may try there again.

Room Tip: Avoid the two rooms on first floor landing.

I attended a presentation evening at this hotel which was a very pleasant experience.

The staff were there but not there, if you know what I mean and kept everything flowing very well - the room was well arranged and the buffet was extremely good - the best smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches ever!

Car parking a bit limited but a huge public one opposite.

All in all a very lovely evening.

Situated very close to the centre of the city, the hotel is very convenient, for non-drivers and drivers alike. But management does need to smarten up its act a bit. The rather grubby carpet in my bedroom should have been properly cleaned (what looked like spray marks from opening a can of drink, plus extensive black marks as if someone had tried polishing their shoes on the carpet) and the torn curtain either repaired or replaced. A 15-minute wait at breakfast time in a half-empty room before being asked what I would like to drink and eat is too long. As for improvements, it's nice to have an iron and ironing board with usual tea/coffee facilities, but a hairdryer would be welcome.
