Now our younger son is at Exeter University we anticipate many stays in this lovely city. Originally we had planned to stay at another (much more expensive) hotel nearby, but were unable to secure a booking at fairly short notice, so we stayed at The White Hart instead - and we now hope to stay there whenever we are in Exeter - it is unbeatable value!
So much is included for the price - free on-site parking (probably unique in Exeter city centre), free wi-fi, free breakfast and a discount on any other meals. Our son joined us for dinner in the evening and enjoyed it so much that he returned for breakfast the next morning (which only cost us just over £4 for him) - and he is planning to eat there again as it is within his student budget!
The staff are all very friendly and the building is an interesting mix of historic (most of the public rooms) and fairly modern (the bedrooms and breakfast room), The bedrooms are large and adequately furnished with spacious en-suite bathrooms.
The food is generally good pub standard food and is reasonably priced (the only dish I wouldn't recommend is the so-called chef's special of salmon in a hot pepper sauce - the sauce was actually more reminiscent of tepid tomatoes - but everything else was brilliant). Good beers too - and the most reasonably priced bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc I have ever found in a restaurant (it was delicious too!). Breakfast is incredibly generous - we didn't need to eat again until late afternoon.
We had obviously been very lucky to book in at short notice, because when we tried to do this again in February they were (understandably) fully booked so we had to stay somewhere more expensive which we didn't like as much (though we did eat at the White Hart in the evening!)- we will book further in advance in future.
