Owner description: Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

“Castle Tour excellent, cafe average”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

The castle grounds and tour are well worth a visit. Plenty of parking. Cost £10 for a senior but reductions for parties. The guide who took us round was brilliant, very knowledgable and able to explain things in a simple manner. It took us about 1 hour 15mins to do the tour. Wheelchair people can still visit but are unable to view the upper floor. To be honest the most interesting part was on the ground floor so don't be put off.

The only downside I felt was the café and would recommend eating/drinking at the café by the farm shop either before or after your visit.

Views were stunning.

Loved everything - the view of the estuary along the coast, the beautiful trees and gardens, the shop and restaurant and the regal castle.

“Well worth visiting”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

The castle and guide were extremely good. So interesting!
Unfortunately the cafe there needs sorting out...staff politeness could be improved. They stopped serving hot food at 3pm. We came in at ten to 3 and asked for jacket potatoes. So we ended up with sandwiches. They were short of prawns - 'the comment was 'we were waiting for your decision, we've been busy.' It didn't help that we had to ask for the dirty tables to be cleaned.
So not good..we did have sandwiches and tea but wouldn't go in their cafe again.

“Fun castle with an excellent guided tour.”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We loved Powderham Castle. Great grounds to walk around, animals to see, nice cafe for a snack, and a terrific guided tour. The latter provided wonderful stories about the castles and the people who've inhabited it for the past 600+ years. We spend nearly four hours walking the castle grounds and it was a great way to spend the afternoon. My son (14) loved it as well.
