Owner description: Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

“Only scratched the surface, but an enjoyable visit”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

We were only passing through, so didn't have time to properly enjoy everything Powderham Castle had to offer. However, we really enjoyed what we saw: the grounds and castle are lovely; there are trails for the children; a play area and (this week) an amazing pirate show! Very impressive! Entry is not cheap, but I think there is enough on offer to make it worthwhile. Would hope to visit again in the future...

“The Tour of the Castle is Fascinating”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

I visited with my mother and we did the grounds first and then the castle tour. The grounds were lovely and there are several trails to walk. The potting sheds and animal enclosure were wonderful. The grounds were also lovely although the rose garden was seriously undermaintained. The roses needed to be dead-headed, there were petals all over the place and some weeds, some of the branches are hanging low blocking the path around the side of the chapel. The castle interior was stunning and our guide was friendly and knew plenty of interesting facts - young guy, can't remember his name now but he was really a credit to the castle. The best thing about the day was the tour, although we also loved the animals. The worst thing was the cafe. The service wasn't friendly and when the guy brought our baked potato with tuna mayo and our pie and chips he asked whether we wanted a knife and fork - well how else are you supposed to eat a jacket potato? Also they don't have any vinegar which is weird since the jacket potatoes, pies and chips are the only hot options and a lot of people have chips. The food itself was nice. We found out later there was another restaurant, alongside a farm shop and garden shop. Wish we had known that was there before! We got the bus to Powderham and it stopped right outside which was very handy. The guy in the entrance hut was very welcoming and friendly too. I'd say allow 3 hours to enjoy Powderham or maybe longer if it's nice weather and you want to enjoy the grounds more.

“Visiting Powderham Castle”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Lovely place to go and explore on a hot sunny day. Had a very good and informative guide in George, WHO told us the long and interesting story about life, people and Things to be seen at the Castle. George also told somthing about "the salt" in the big hall, and to be ove or under the salt. I am not quite sure what it was all about, and I would be happy for any further explanation? Have looked for an e mail adress to Powderham, but cannot find any. Beutyful Park and surroundings, lovely shops, cafe's, Places to sit and to enjoy. Also good for children.

“Castle Tour excellent, cafe average”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

The castle grounds and tour are well worth a visit. Plenty of parking. Cost £10 for a senior but reductions for parties. The guide who took us round was brilliant, very knowledgable and able to explain things in a simple manner. It took us about 1 hour 15mins to do the tour. Wheelchair people can still visit but are unable to view the upper floor. To be honest the most interesting part was on the ground floor so don't be put off.

The only downside I felt was the café and would recommend eating/drinking at the café by the farm shop either before or after your visit.

Views were stunning.
