Owner description: Dating from 14th century, these medieval passages under Exeter High Street are a unique ancient monument: no similar system of passages can be explored by the public elsewhere in Britain. The Passages have long exercised a fascination over local people, with stories of wars and sieges, plague and pestilence! Their purpose was simple: to bring clean drinking water from natural springs in fields lying outside the walled city, through lead pipes into the heart of the city. The pipes sometimes sprang leaks and repairs to buried pipes could only be carried out by digging them up as we do today. To avoid this disruption the passages were vaulted and it is down some of these vaulted passageways that visitors are guided. The Passages are dark and narrow with a fascinating history. Visitors can experience interactive and educational exhibits in the Underground Passages Heritage Centre and watch a short video presentation before their guided tour.

“Informative and Interesting”

We enjoyed our tour through the passages and it was certainly an interesting alternative to walking around the shops! The tour guide was very informative and if your interested in the history of Exeter its ideal. Be aware that some parts of the tour, as its underground, can be a little difficult to get through but all in all, the access is very good.

Great tour of the City's underground. Interesting how a variety of very real engineering problems were solved by these passages. Enjoyed going underground in Exeter

“Cool”

Quite cool in the passages. It seems not all Exeter residents know about the passages or have been down them, but we had an interesting history of the tunnels before we went down and during the walk. Not for those who do not like confined spaces.

“Great!”

Went to the underground passages today on a school trip. What a great time! A very odd way to spent half an hour but fantastic staff and very interesting. Really good interactive area too, lots to learn and some really fun elements.
