“Finally a REAL boutique hotel!”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

The hotel is in Southernhay, near the new shopping development but set quietly near the law courts. This is a new hotel that I think has only recently opened and has amazing decor. All the rooms are different ( Marie, one of the staff gave me a tour round ), but are all uber stylish and comfortable. I stayed in silk ( the 10 rooms have names not numbers ) which was really comfortable.
This is definately not your average hotel and has lots of quirky touches that are in the public areas including the bar. We did have lunch from the special menu which was really good ( wood pigeon with pearl barley - yum!)
Lovely informal but very attentive service.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms with the free standing baths

We stayed at Southernhay House a few nights after it first opened, and were bowled over as much by the crisp elegance of the exterior as by the smooth crispness of the fabulously large and comfy bed. We stayed in Cotton, a huge room, with waterfall shower, great big roll-top tub: felt very cossetted.

The front garden and sweep drive allow for a very Jane Austen-style arrival. The back garden will be enclosed, but already, with it's colonial-style verandah and lawn it's an elegant place to sip your drink or sit with a coffee and the paper. There's a surprising aura of Tennessee Williams or Scarlett O'Hara about the back: I loved it there.

The bar is a surprise with its 1950s lounge-lizard furniture. Great cocktails, and we recommend seeking out mixologist Vlad, who makes a mean martini, and is charm itself. Like several of the staff, he cut his teeth at the owners' other hotel, Burgh Island: Southernhay is a different beast altogether - Sex in the City as against Poirot on the Beach - but what has made a wild success of Burgh Island will also work at Southern Hotel: attention to detail; understated luxury; excellent eating and drinking; and friendly, approachable staff.

If you live in Exeter, it's a smart alternative to the bars around and about, or a special spot for dinner: hell, if you wanted to impress clients you'd be hard pushed to find somewhere better for a breakfast meeting than the private dining room. If you don't live there, try to encourage your kids to go to Exeter Uni, so you have the excuse to stop over...!
