“Excellent Lunch”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

A belated Fathers'Day treat from my daughter. Our previous visit some weeks' ago (albeit very soon after opening following re-furbishment) was disappointing- we chose not to dine on that occasion. However today's visit was faultless. Ailthough 30 minutes late arriving for our table booking, the efficient front of house welcome was indicative of the memorable experience which was to follow. The extensive choice of affordable wines available by the glass added to the enjoyment of the food which we selected from the interesting menu. My daughter's gluton free diet was accommodated without difficulty and my starter, the duck scotch egg with home-made piccalilli was perfectly executed and the chicken with celeriac main course was a delight. The professionalism of our waitress (Eddy) and the rest of the team in the impressively maintained garden completed the pleasure. A truly worthwhile short trip into the countryside.Highly recommended.

“Friendly, inviting local pub with a great atmosphere”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

Although the pub is a bit out the way and hard to find it's well worth the effort! The beer garden is perfect on a summers day and the new decor is great. The young guys on the bar were very professional and polite. The John Dory was cooked to perfection. Highly recommended.

“lovely staff,patchy food”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

nice situation and lovely (but over restored )pub. An exceptional young man at the front but patchy food possibly because it was a Sunday evening? Perfect salmon with fennel but tough beef with a dry and crisped Yorkshire and tasteless potatoes which seemed reheated from lunch. Pleasant puds. Not worth the detour

“Lunch at the five bells inn”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

Well,a little awkward to find but upon arrival i thought how charming and lovely. So in we went, service very good but oh dear, the decor? Felt like i was sat in a housing estate lounge showroom, very magnolia and uninviting-not good, doesn't fit with the exterior cottage character at all..Onto the order,i went for the set menu but wanted the scotch duck egg rather than pate,at a mere 30 pence more i thought it would be ok(considering the premium red wine was going down rather well),but not so! Not allowed, heads would roll etc.Oh dear i thought, but i wanted the scotch egg so i ordered it with the fishcakes and blimey the scotch egg was simply the best most delightful scotch egg i have ever tasted, absolutely fantastic. The fishcakes, very good as well/so altogether a delightful meal.Would i go again? ,Maybe-not sure a scotch egg is worth the 25 mile round trip from Exeter, but i may well do and i think everyone should try once at least.
