Odd place. Well familiar with YHA hostels. This does not compare. Tiered, thin mattresses, stained and burnt, ThIn sheets and bedding and solid foam pillow. Cold and single light in dormitory left on all night. There residents more interested in night life. I was quite out of place for weekend exploring. Dormitories never locked so open to all. Checkout late for any person wanting to get on with the day. Cheap though so uncomfortable not worth the value.

I think Globe Backpackers Exeter is one of the best i have stayed in for a long time. Iv'e been in hostels in Australia, England and America and this is defs one of the best.

It's really clean everywhere, the beds are proper mattresses which i haven't slept on in other Hostels for a while. It has good colour in the sourrounding rooms. The staff are great. They have been really helpful in helping me find places, bus routes and finding pubs. To be honest you get more than what you pay for here. The bathrooms are fantastic, the rooms are massive, the people staying there are friendly. Free Wifi, plenty of books to read, movies to watch, posters and photo's of previous people who have stayed who looked like had a great time. All in all loved it. Defs would recommend it for others.

Room Tip: Dorm rooms to meet new people

We really enjoy running our traditional backpacker hostel and of course it's always great to have such a fantastic reviews from people passing through - especially when they are well travelled and have experience hostelling in different parts of the World. We wish we had found a hostel with showers like those we now offer when we were travelling back in '97. Thanks again for posting your review.

Nice people, high disponibility, great bathrooms. Some problem with smells solved brilliantly, but the crow jewels were the showers! Nice lounge room with Wi-Fi free, high speed, all day long. Small kitchen, but really useful for those who stayed there for months. I never locked the room because it's really a safe place, I never saw a stranger being let in without having a reservation. I met french people, spanish, italians, american, british, spanish, philippinians... of all religions and ages. I highly recommand it!

Thanks for your review. We're pleased you felt so safe. You're right, we've had very little trouble in the 13 years since we opened. Having travelled ourselves, we know the importance of feeling secure and make a real point of creating as safe and secure environment for our guests as possible whilst giving them the freedom to come and go as they want during their stay. We also love the fact that we get so many international people coming through!

OK this is a hostel so you get what you pay for. The highlight of this place was the newly refurbished men's toilets and shower rooms. Tiled, wet room type showers were a pleasant surprise. As a mixed group we were offered bunk beds in a Men's dorm. They were basic - difficult to put covers on the matress on the upper bunks. One top bunk had missing rungs of the ladder and no guard to keep someone falling out!

It seemed like some of the residents were 'long stay' hostellers with named food in baskets in the kitchen fridge. As mentioned in previous reviews the owners are keen (with a plethora of notices) that hostellers clear up after themselves in the kitchen. Seemed a bit condesending for more mature/responsible visitors.

On the whole the 'lounge area' contained useful information on nearby facilities/cafes etc.

Return visit? Probably unlikely!

Thank you for your feedback. We are of course disappointed you rate our hostel as "average" as we are constantly reviewing, updating and re-decorating to give our guests as great a value stay as possible. We have increasingly found that people using backpacker accommodation seem to have much higher expectations for this style of accommodation than they used to. We keep diversifying to accommodate those requirements. For instance, we were offering free WiFi long before the golden arches and we believe the 5* hotel across the road still charges extra. So much is expected to be included in the price these days which used to earn extras for the business. It wasn't long ago that it was normal for hostels to have coin operated showers to cover the cost of water and heat on top of the cost of your bed night - and linen was extra too! Yes, it's true we can have a number of people here for more than just one or two nights for varying reasons including waiting to join the royal marines, job-seeking, flat-hunting and such like. Some of our international travellers have come for the weekend from London and decided not to return because it's so friendly, clean and homely here. The alternative to notices requesting people to clear up after themselves is to install cameras like many other hostels have - which we are trying to avoid. Sorry we didn't do enough to encourage you back again - we'll keep trying!

Whilst staying at this site whilst waiting for permanant accomodation, we have found the staff very friendly and open to us. Nothing is a problem to them as they help us with our enquiries from time tables to directions and almost anything.

There is a open kitchen to use as well as a tv lounge, the new showers are lovely, the social area is very spacious and a good place to meet other people.

Despite other reviews, this hostel is not hard to find. It is on the city wall walk just near the Quay, so very well situated in comparison to the other (2) hostels which are 20mins walk out of town. For convenience' sake, it's fine. It's large with a relatively clean kitchen, eating area/common room and tv room but feels crowded even with a relatively low occupancy in winter.

Key downsides: showers are out of action due to renovation and those that are available are only free to use during ridiculous hours (b/w 430am - 1030am only); toilets on ground and level one are dirty and were only cleaned towards the end of the 48 hours I resided; toilet paper was not replaced at all; despite traditional key locks on bedroom doors, doors do not lock behind you and other guests are wont to leave the door ajar (note: there are no storage lockers in the rooms); the bins had not been emptied in my room, nor the carpets vacuumed for some time, it appeared as though the random bags (of rubbish?) strewn around the room belonged to previous occupants; guests are meant to be quiet after 11pm but there was a raucous party going on well past 2am the first night I stayed... a random guy even walked in (the unlocked) female dorm in which I stayed around 4am.

The duty manager is nice enough and the other guests friendly but it appears that this time of year most are workers rather than travellers. Perhaps this explained the 'lived in' mess feel to the room in which I stayed and lax security. Shame, because this place has all the elements to be a decent hostel. Seriously needs to brush up on security, cleanliness and all round consideration of other guests though. Won't stay here again in a hurry.

Staying in the Globe Backpackers in Exeter was a terrible experience. Some people found bedbugs in their room. A few days later, they were all over the hostel. I do not recommend going to this place, you will not get much sleep, will have an itch all over your body, you will sleep in the scent of anti-bugs chemicals, and possibly carry the bedbugs home in your luggage. Also, the showers weren't very comfortable and clean, and I witnessed fights between staff members. The staff told me they would contact me about a refund, but so far I did not hear from them.
