I just love this hotel.. glad it has re-opened and such a beautiful place to go.. Exeter needs this hotel and bar !.. I hired the Chapter One private dining room for my sisters Surprise 40th birthday..it was ABSOLUTELY SUPERB.. Great service and the food was great too..and such superb value £19.50 per head for a 3 course meal in our own private dining room.. we never left the room !.. Will be booking there again very soon. The only very small downside is very limited parking probably about 4 spaces and 3 disabled spaces.Apart from that 10 out of 10 and thank you to Darcie the Events Manager

A unigue building full of architectural gems. We just spent 3 days at the chapter and will happily return. We had room 308...if you like great views from wonderful balconies that overlook the gardens and the city..BOOK NOW. The minute you enter the building the staff fall over themselves to accommodate your needs. Mostly all local staff with some europeans the buzz is relaxed chic. I pads control your stay and keep you totally informed. The restaurant is easy styling with a soft air of soho. Attentive waiters, The essential (see in kitchen) and good honest grub ! They even have there own kitchen herb garden..If you require a drink..head to the cocktail bar....Fabulous! Read a book..Enter the library. Balmy evenings..The terrace. Stroll into the city..On your doorstep. This hotel is techno chic with a glance over its well manicured shoulder..Gorgeous..

Room Tip: Book in and indulge your senses

This is a really well renovated old eye hospital, the exterior is unbeatable beautiful Victorian architecture, the interior very well done, typically modern and reminds me of new Hong Kong / Chinese interiors. All wi fi friendly, paperless and ready for the next decades. Something is missing - professionalism,it is administered by a bunch of rather amateur young, would-be-trendy hotel-mangers. The restaurant is very well positioned, views outside etc. seating good, menus interesting, but something goes wrong it's like the food is coming out of a fast food freezer with no personal chefs touch whatsoever. The waiters have not a clue what certain items are, like where do the oysters come from, or what is the onglet cut. There's a sell it and ask no questions. They must put in a really professional 'on site 24/7' manager who is overseeing all the time, or it will descend into an upmarket 'Travel Lodge'

We stayed at the chains sister hotel in Cheltenham early this year so we had very high expectations. Unfortunately we were massivly let down. The room we had was minute. We couldn't even put our bags down in the room it was so small. The bathroom was unbelievable. It was a struggle to dry yourself. The restaurant was highly staffed but the service was dreadful and that was only for breakfast.

Having emailed prior to our stay to ask if the gym had rowing machines (because I'm something of a rowing geek), I was most disappointed to receive a call and learn that not only the gym, but the pool, AND the spa, are not yet available. At least they called, but the facilities were what made us choose this hotel. (All not lost however; apparently we could use a council pool a 10-15 min walk away. Ahem!) The website made no comment regarding this and in fact lead us to believe that all these luxurious facilities were available and and articulating our disappointment at this is difficult.

On to the positives.... Stunning room with a fantastically comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom and gorgeous view. Very nice touch with the iPad for the room; the 'free' mini bar was okayish; however all staff (reception, bar, restaurant) were very welcoming, friendly and not at all snobby - which sadly can often be the case is classier establishments. We were very much put at ease. Love the uniform, especially the Converse All Stars as footwear. We did wonder if the friendly and easy going nature of the staff was down to the newness of the establishment; we really hope not.

Would love to come back to make use of the gym, the spa, and the inside-out pool! A room upgrade made a small acknowledgement of our disappointment but didn't quite satiate it!

This is a very good 4-star hotel. Can't compare to the old hotel as this was our first visit, but in our opinion, the chic, modern furniture mixes well with the old-style building. Rooms well appointed, staff very good - friendly and accommodating and food good. Plenty of choice at breakfast and the evening meal was very nice. Location is excellent as only a few minutes walk from the centre of Exeter. iPads in each room provide a nice touch as they contain information about the hotel and local area. Equally, the free mini bar is a nice surprise (a few soft drinks, bottle of beer and small bottle of wine each day, plus a bar of chocolate) as is the option of a free newspaper.
Wi-Fi freely available throughout the hotel.
Just 2 grievances: The tea strainers are awkward to use and the hairdryer (whilst good) has one of those annoying buttons you have to keep pressed in for it work. Other than that, highly recommended!

Find an excuse to visit Exeter because this is a stunning hotel, amongst the best we have ever stayed in. The refurbishment has clearly been done to an incredibly high specification which makes me wonder how they will turn a profit from this place, and that's before they open the spa (which, from a quick look, looked beautiful).

Our room was incredibly comfortable and, like the rest of the hotel, full of clever and thoughtful details, from the complimentary mini-bar to the speakers in the bathroom. Despite being at the front of the building, there was no traffic noise at all, thanks to the double glazing.

The restaurant and public areas are tasteful, elegant, relaxing and, like the bedroom, expensively and comfortably furnished, and the food was exceptional both at dinner and at breakfast.

But all hotels stand or fall on two things: how well you sleep, and how well you are looked after by the staff. On both these counts, this hotel triumphs. The beds, clad in crisp white linen, are perfect, and the staff manage to be efficient and yet very friendly at the same time. Either they are great actors, or they really do care about your stay. They couldn't do enough for us.

This place is a gem.

Room Tip: We had one of the smallest (and cheapest rooms) and it was absolutely fine - plenty of room for a co...
