This is I think my fourth stay here in just over a year and it keeps on delivering. It's a perfect example of how a hotel can be relaxed and well run. Staff are excellent, restaurant very good and rooms very comfortable. Also very dog friendly Lack of car parking is an irritation but there is a public car park adjacent.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Am writing a book and have been doing so part of my days at Magdalen Chapter. Inspiring, stylish and very clean. I have eaten dozens of meals and have spent hours here. Food consistently superb: the buffalo mozzarella with grilled aubergine, tomato and grilled pepper being a special favourite. Fresh and interesting breads. Delicious cookies. Great coffees and a wide range of cocktails. Love the dinners as well -- tasty and often with locally-sourced ingredients. Music is relaxing, people very happy, lots of lights and professional staff. There is a reason that it is hard to get a table here for Sunday afternoon teas. An acknowledgement in my book will go to the Magdalen Chapter for facilitating an ideal sabbatical for my book. Thank you all!

Great looking place but disappointing visit. Air con did't work, HDMI playback faulty and car parking insufficient. Reported air con fault but it wasn't fixed. Road noise too loud have window open. Fetched a new HDMI cable from reception after waiting half an hour for techie support. Replacement was also faulty. Removed our car as requested from the drop off spaces into pay and display but the BMW that took our space didn't think it necessary. Neither did the staff. No gluten free options on any menu. Staff very badly dressed. Not appealing. Requested a refund at 10pm, told to wait and speak to manager in the morning. Very unimpressed.

This has to be one of the worst hotels I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. Arrived in my £80K Car to be told had to park in a public car park and pay extra. Had spa treatment booked, was pointed to changing rooms and told to get a robe and proceed another 50 Metres to spa, no robes in changing rooms just a notice saying dial 0 for a robe. Had massage was ok and returned to swimming pool to meet my wife who advised she gad been trying to get someone to see her and sort some champagne for 15 mins. They have a fire room in pool area, a rusty tatty log burner that should be consigned to scrap. Dinner booked for 8.00 arrived suitably booted and suited to be greeted by a bunch of scruffy looking women in baseball boots whose accents made it very difficult to understand what I was ordering and receiving . Meal acceptable, returned to room tiny shower Luke warm water and very noisy, managed 4 hours sleep. Breakfast hideous, open plan kitchen meant I couldn't hold a conversation with my wife due to continual clattering and banging and same baseball boot clad women clowning around. Toast dry, bacon dry, egg hard and to top it all table faced patch of grass outside next to spa and pool area where a dog spent 10 minutes doing his morning business. Disgust doesn't begin to describe how we both felt whilst trying to swallow the abysmal breakfast. Cancelled evening meal and tried to cancel prepaid second night but couldn't. I wouldn't reccomend this hotel to any living man or beast.

Gorgeous hotel, restaurant and spa! Brilliant service, decor and food. Highly recommend having a lazy Sunday afternoon here! Cocktails on the lawn! Brilliant themed days/ afternoons. Love the library for afternoon tea! And the super cool "potting shed " for hiring for a private party.

My Wife, our 14 month old and I stayed last minute and found the staff extremely friendly, the room very spacious and comfortable and the whole ambiance of the hotel very welcoming. We enjoyed a glass of wine in the garden area before dinner at the restaurant in the evening. The food was good but not cheap, probably slightly overpriced for what it is. The next morning the three of us took to the small pool to float around and relax and we would certainly return and recommend the place to friends.

The only slight let down was the time it took for the food to arrive at the restaurant and the lack of the connecting cable to go from our mac to the tv (via their swanky technology hub). The hotel makes a point about being tech advanced and raised our expectations but were then not able to meet them.

We decided to split our trip to SW Cornwall with a stay in Exeter and thought we would give the Magdalen Chapter a go as they were offering good last minute rates on the Bank Holiday. The hotel is well located for the centre of the city. It offers some parking on-site with two carparks very near by. The Chapter hotels are quite 'techy' and tend to be modern in style. The building itself is lovely, an old eye hospital with plenty of character. The feeling is quite informal and we liked the style of the reception.

The tech alas sometimes lets them down and on arrival neither laptop would work for check-in. The receptionist popped out to back office to check us in. This lead to no confirmation of the rate (I'll come to that later) and I was checked in as Andrew as opposed to Richard. Easily rectified. I enquired about dinner but was informed that only Room Service was available. (see later) Our room was on the second floor opposite the lifts which were thankfully reasonably quiet as we'd requested a 'quiet room'. Special rates do often mean the less desirable rooms, so not a problem for what would be a quick overnight stay.

The room itself was smalll and although it had very high ceilings the dark wood used throughout did make it feel smaller. With curtains drawn one side of the bed had to be approached sideways. The bed was very comfortable, the room was cool and with the double glazing any traffic noise was barely audible. A complimentary mini-bar was available in the room which was a nice touch. The bathroom was well equipped but alas our towels were on the floor.

Most things are controlled by an iPad handed to you at reception. You can book dinner, order room service and control a number of different options as well as surf the web. The ipad did suggest that a dinner reservation could be made at 930pm which confused us as we had arrived at 830pm but we assumed a glitch and ordered room service. The ipad suggested our order would be confirmed to us but after 20mins we thought it best to phone down to confirm. The food was fine when it arrived.

We popped to the bar and had a cocktail each. When we came to pay, we were given the wrong bill as their had been a mix up. We were told they could not produce our bill so not to worry. I informed them of what we had and our room number. Although assured it was their mistake and not to worry we did see the charges on the bill.

On returning to the room I was unable to charge the ipad as a previous guest had removed the cable. In the morning I let reception know, they said they would sort it and took the ipad to charge for me. I didn't get it back and no cable arrived.

Although we booked a BandB rate we were not on the list which is always annoying. Breakfast was ok but not the best I've had. I opted for a cooked breakfast but the mushrooms appeared tinned? Or stewed and the black pudding was not great. They should get some great locally sourced Hog's Pudding on the menu. Our salt and pepper shakers were alas empty and after a couple of attempts we found one that worked.

All in all a comfortable stay but many small errors that can be so easily avoided. Bank Holidays and Sundays can sometimes stretch service levels in hotels. We'd stay again on a similar rate but we've now tried two Chapter hotels with similar issues. Most of the problems are training related and easily resolved. Room service checks to ensure the crucial tech functions and staff following a clear check in procedure to confirm guest names, rates and fully aware of dining options. It would be good to very good but for the little issues.
