“Excellent hotel”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

My husband and I have just stayed in the Magdalen Chapter Hotel for three nights. We had a fantastic stay. The hotel used to be a Victorian eye infirmary and the architecture, outside and inside, is wonderful.
The staff is extremely friendly and makes you feel welcome.
Breakfast is very good value for money, and it is appetising.
We used the pool, open air, well heated, and I gather you can even have a deep in the winter.
I also used the spa facility, lovely and professional treatment, well worth it.
We also took advantage of leisurely reading on the deckchairs set on the lawn.
Great barman and great cocktails.
We did not eat in the restaurant while we were there. The location of the hotel is perfect, as you can walk to the city centre and be there in 5 minutes.
Parking is limited, we had read it on the hotel website, as there are only a limited number of spaces - we were lucky to find a space, but there is a public car park next to the hotel.
I would strongly recommend to anyone this hotel (we have stayed in many hotels all around the world)

This is a truly wonderful hotel. Having only stayed for one night we wished we'd booked for longer and had the chance to use all the facilities available (spa and gym). The spa was fully booked though so probably my fault that I didn't book in advance but we will definitely return for a spa break without the kids. From check in to check out the staff could not be faulted (apart from the slightly odd uniform - not there fault), they were friendly, attentive and always there to help. Luckily for us it was a hot sunny day so the outside areas were lovely to have early evening drinks (cocktails are amazing - shame I couldn't have more) before dinner and the staff really looked after our kids. Dinner in the restaurant was pricey but definitely worth the money, the whole package is there to be able to charge those prices, the atmosphere, mood and views from the restaurant plus the excellent quality of food. We had mussels and quail to start then steak and duck for main which couldn't be faulted and the kids enjoyed there pasta. The room was plenty big enough for the 4 of us, the bathroom had good toiletries and a lovely bath and the bed was super comfy. Parking is an issue at the hotel, but we saw this on the website when looking into the hotel and then were told on the phone at the time of booking so didn't cause us a problem or stop us from staying at this hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay. See you sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Feature rooms are well worth the money. Cathedral views one side and lovely hotel gardens the other...

just stayed one night. Loved the décor in the ground floor areas and the gardens - it was a beautiful day so lots of people enjoying pre dinner drinks on the lawn. Our room was fine but with lots of high windows the blinds really do not offer black out so woke early, and there was also quite a lot of noise from the corridor. Quite enjoyed dinner but we did struggle with what to choose - to us some of the combinations of flavours seemed rather excessive- even the side dishes had several components. All in all would definitely stay again but probably not eat in the restaurant for dinner. Breakfast was very pleasant.

Room Tip: if you wake with the light avoid rooms with 5 windows !!!

My wife and I recently spent a wonderful evening at the hotel , and cannot recommend it more highly , the staff with who we met,and had dealings with, were young, polite, pleasant and eager to please, the evening meal was a delight and our waiter "josh" was attentive and knowledgeable(admittedly the uniform could do with adjusting, however this is a modern hotel and we believe the uniform tends to reflect this) Our feature room provided a great panoramic view over the city, it was spacious, clean and modern, with more than enough facilities such as mini bar/TV and iPad. We cannot believe some peoples trivial comments regarding car alarms being activated(why couldn't the guests make a call to 101) . And as for a previous guest stating there was nowhere to park his £80k vehicle !!!!..( We managed to read the small print which states there is limited parking.some people need to get a grip on reality and life is not all . We recommend a stay at the hotel .. You won't be disappointed

Why don't more hotels offer click of a button (or in this case, tap of the screen) room service?! When we were first handed the iPad at check-in I was sceptical, but within minutes I had all the menus and room info at my finger tips and after a long journey with traffic jams on the M5, the ability to 'tap' for a glass of prosecco from the room and it arrive minutes later felt like bliss!! The room (221) was spacious, clean, and comfy. The complimentary mini bar, gorgeous hotel products and comfy bed was all to a very high standard. A travel cot and towel was also ready to go in the room for our baby. When we arrived we were put in one of the Feature rooms facing the main road, which although well appointed with an amazing bathroom, was not as quiet at the garden-facing rooms. The staff moved us in minutes. We also had a swim in the pool, which was empty, warm and inviting. We loved the whole experience including the very kind and friendly staff on at breakfast who kept coming over to make our baby laugh! We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: We had a Feature Room and saw two of them. Both gorgeous, but 221 was our favourite. It faced the ga...

Spent a Sunday night here on a deal that offered an affordable room rate with £75 thrown in to spend in their restaurant. Started the afternoon with a massage which was enjoyable - friendly staff. Book ahead though if you want to use the spa as we seemingly got the last spots booking about a week before arrival.

Post-massage, we settled down on the patio area at the back and drank a few too many G&Ts. All good.

The room was a Feature room, one of their best apparently. It wasn't massive...had a small bath (one of those that's open to the world) and tight fitted toilet and shower, but was pleasant, and the free minibar was welcome (2 beers, a couple of cokes and some water is pretty much all you get though, in case you're thinking you could go crazy).

Dinner was pleasant too - nothing ground-breaking, but nice. As was breakfast, with one of the chattiest hotel waitresses I've ever come across. She was great.

All in all, a very enjoyable night.

The 'they're still finding their feet' comment relates to the fact that the hotel felt a little unsure of itself from a design perspective. It's an old converted eye hospital, so lots of character, but some of design (it's full of trendy and sometimes uncomfortable furniture, and bold wallpaper etc.) feels a bit misplaced - forced - thrown together. So it's good, but think in a few years time it could feel even better.

I used to stay here when it was the Hotel Barcelona, sadly Alias hotels seem to have collapsed. The new re-vamped version is still very attractive inside, we had a great Sunday lunch at a very reasonable rate, dinner the night before was a little pricey. Facilities all very good, pool, spa and public rooms. My only issue really was with the room which was 'compact' and the bathroom which was also 'compact'. I got a last minute weekend deal so do not expect miracles and am not a big person but the lack of any sort of storage in the room was a bit of a problem, no drawers, just a very small hanging cupboard with a fairly narrow shelf for clothes etc and in the bathroom the same, nowhere to put anything which was a slight annoyance. I would therefore recommend upgrading from the standard room to something more superior. Overall I nice enough stay though.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a large room
