I am 44 and whilst I left Exeter at the age of 18, on my regular trips 'home' to the city, a visit is never complete without going to the Milkmaid. Downstairs is not where it's at, upstairs is a large lunch room with a decent outside space (lovely view over the cathedral). Soups, open sandwiches, rarebits and stuff on toast is the food that the Milkmaid do best. The cakes are pretty special too. The milkshakes seem to have shrunk over the years (or perhaps I just grew...).
It does seem to cater to the older crowd, but perhaps they're just like me: the Milkmaid is a feature in their lives that they too share with family and friends.
I love it there and wouldn't visit Exeter without dropping in. It's like an old friend.
