“Nice hotel, but be wary if you have a baby or mobility problems”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

Hi, this was a lovely hotel, room was big and bed was exceedingly comfy (unusual for a hotel bed). Bathroom was luxurious. We had a special rate as we were staying for a wedding. Staff were very attentive and pleasant and very helpful.

the only problems i found were as follows
1) we had our 16 month old with us, and there were several other children staying. They only have one high chair, so we had to take it in shifts for breakfast.
2) to use their travel cot costs £15 PN - we found it cheaper to buy one and take it with us (£29.99) plus we still have the cot.
3)i have restricted mobility, as patrons should be aware there is a flight of steep outside steps to get into the hotel

Made to feel very welcome and just what we needed for a night away - very quirky building - room ideal, homemade biscuits (yum) bed a bit hard but lovely soft pillows, large bathroom with fantastic shower, breakfast excellent - didn't try the restaurant as prior arrangements, but will stay again for a spot of Christmas shopping as ideal location for shops, not too near for noise at night and not too far away to go back and dump shopping - menu looked fantastic so will eat in next time :-)

Stayed here for a wedding anniversary celebration with my husband. The hotel is quirky and full of character - yes the floors are slopey, but this didn't detract from a fantastic nights sleep in the enormous comfortable bed. The food was fantastic, my duck starter was just "good", but my main course and dessert were out of this world. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast in the morning was also top notch. The centre of Exeter's shopping district is a stone's throw away and yet the hotel is situated in a secluded square away from the noise and traffic. And right opposite is a large public car park which we were given a free parking permit for. A lovely hotel and very highly recommended.

Our 2nd visit here & no doubt will not be our last. I can't understand the negative reviews but each to there own.
The imaginative food menu again looked & tasted fantastic. It's not an extensive menu but everything on it sounds so tempting it makes it hard to decide.
Staff were polite and attentive, a special mention to Alfie who is the restaurant manager of the adjoining restaurant " The olive tree". He made our evening more enjoyable as he was very knowledgeable about the dishes, his recommendation's were spot on. Thank you.
Once again the room was clean & comfy airy & bright. Not grand but not shabby either.
Paul on the reception was helpful and was happy to oblige each time we had a special request, nothing was to much bother- thank you.
Parking opposite, only a short walk to town and the hotels in a lovely setting, try it.

Room Tip: Leave room for a pudding!! Front facing rooms are lovely.

Arrived late at the hotel, getting checked in was no fuss or problem. Bryony was more than happy to help and get us a drink and some nibbles too. Room was very big and nicely decorated, bathroom could have done with a bit of work but was clean. Good nights sleep and excellent breakfast in the morning. Really good start to a long weekend - thanks

This is not a review of the hotel itself but of the function room downstairs.
My partner had booked the room as the venue for my 40th birthday party.
The cost of the room was reasonable although the cost of the buffet food had we chose to have it was very expensive so we asked if we could just bring some nibbles etc which they allowed.
My partner set the room up in the afternoon and this was the first time i had seen it and was impressed and was a really nice room with small dancefloor and private bar and we were able to play our own music through an ipod which was great.
It was only when we and our guests arrived in the night that we were greeted by the fact that the bar was all bottles and no draught(not a major problem) but the price of those bottles was £5.50 each!!!!!!!!! which even for hotel prices seemed very expensive. If they had been £4.50 a bottle nobody would have had a problem being that it was a hotel but the price meant that i felt embarrassed at my guests having to spend that much on drinks and people probably drunk less than they normally would have.
Overall i still had a great night and was great to catch up with family and friends but the end result was that you had approx 40 people who left thinking that the room was really nice(which it was) and would love to have a party there but will never go back or will never recommend it due the overly expensive bar prices.

Don't be misled by the photos of this hotel it's nowhere near as large as it seems. Our room was on the third floor (actually in the roof)which posed some height restrictions due to the eves of the roof. The lift only goes to the second floor . The en suite bathroom serves a purpose but the toilet when flushed makes a quite loud vibrating noise. The breakfast was very good which consisted of cereals, continental or full English but the tea left a lot to be desired. The cups on our table could have done with a proper clean and some of the dishes were chipped
There are plenty of shops restaurants , cafés and bars around and Exmouth is only 20 minutes away by train.
