“Terrible!”
Reviewed 17 April 2011

I am at a loss to put into words how terrible this place is. With the exception of one lad, all the staff were surly, miserable and very rude. There drinks were expensive and the food was of a standard you would expect of a 1970's motorway service station. For people who work in the hospitality industry they could do with buying a dictionary and looking the word hospitality up, because their understanding of it is not the same as the rest of the world's.

presented with a meal I wouldnt expect as a school dinner. The fish pie contained watery sauce and no fish and the veg was clearly a week old. Inedible and almost £10. A disgrace.being asked if the entire plateful was ok and taking it away one would expect an approach by staff to refund or exchange. Of course the money taken prior to the vile food being presented makes for an awkward exchange if one has the energy. Wont recommend to other travellers as the place needs a damned good clean too.

I stayed 1 night on business but would happily stay longer and for leisure. It's a great little hotel with recently refurbed rooms and bathrooms in modern decor. Free wifi, comfy beds, power showers and breakfast cooked to order. It's above a pub which is a bit odd when you arrive but I didn't notice it in my room at all. Family friendly but no good if you struggle with stairs/have a large suitcase as stairs are narrow and there's no lift. Common areas need refurbing but it's good they've done the rooms first. It's easy walking distance to the town centre too

Stayed with a colleague for one night for work. Rooms were comfortable and spacious although decor perhaps a little tired. Bed comfortable and did not hear any outside noise. Had evening meal in the pub and had a lovely meal at a very reasonable cost. Breakfast was cooked to order and could not be faulted. Used the car park over the road which was very reasonable for overnight. Will come again.

Stayed at the City Gate (on family recommendation) when visiting the city for a family party. Hotels.com had failed to pass on my booking, but the very efficient desk staff sorted it out quickly and painlessly. Very pleasant rooms, nicely furnished and clean, and a great location. All of the staff throughout the weekend were helpful and friendly. The bar/conservatory were perfect for a pre- and post-party drink. A good breakfast, too! Will definitely stay there again.

Staff were all friendly, courteous and helpful.
Because I was there for 13 nights, the breakfast menu became boring for me. That is not a fault of theirs. The breakfast is your standard English breakfast - nutritious and tasty.

That said, I noticed that housekeeping didn't seem to be up to standard. I know for sure the floor was not vacuumed because the dirt on the floor was there for several days. The toilet was cleaned but not thorough. The corner room I was assigned, faced the main street. The shut windows were not enough to shut the traffic noise.
