What a fantastic hidden gem in the centre of a city.
Stayed there due to our friends wedding yesterday, the food at the function was great, my friends and her mum are wheat free and were well catered for too!

The cellar bar where the main party was held at night was a fantastic location, good music, good service and a great time had by all.

Unfortunately the only downside was that the room was rather filthy, the glasses/coffee cups had been clearly just rinsed out in the bathroom and there was thick dust and bulbs not working in the bedroom.

I can honestly say that a very quick chat with the assistant manager resolved everything, she explained about a problem with the cleaners.... Being in the hospitality trade for 12 years I understand completely how that can let you down.

The breakfast had a few mix ups, the wrong order brought out twice (perhaps I shouldn't be so picky?) This was prior to me speaking with the assistant manager anyway, when it came it had the most beautiful poached free range eggs, thick grilled bacon and wonderful butchers sausages!

I will stay here again if there is a function, I will recommend it and hope they sort out the cleaners soon.

I stayed here overnight (midweek) with my girlfiend and - overall - it was a good value B&B.
We arrived late at 10:50pm and, after dropping our bags into the room, we went straight downstairs for a drink in the bar (the City Gate is, after all, a pub - not a hotel). Unfortunately, the bar-staff would not serve us as they had already "cashed-up" for the evening. We thought they could have charged a bottle of wine to our room, but no. The manager needs to decide if this is a hotel, or a pub with rooms. If it's a hotel, then paying guests need to be served alcoholic drinks at any time - not just when it's convenient to the staff.
The room was spacious and comfortable, and quiet - we had a good nights sleep.
In the morning, the staff were in a better mood. Altho' we had booked room-only, we were accommodated for breakfast at £6.50 each which I thought was very reasonable indeed. What's more, the breakfast was all freshly cooked and better than I've had in some much pricier establishements - well done to the chef.
A good value place for an overnight stay in Exeter.

Sunday lunch was excellent, most welcoming had our 3 young children with us nothing was to much trouble, Roast Beef Excellent, extra Gravy, Yorkshire puds, fresh veg just as it should be. Childrens portions excellent. Rocky Road Cheesecake we ordered one portion between two 7 year old twins as one being a very faddy eater But we had to order another portion as low and behold one large portion was liked so much. Sticky toffee pud mmmm. We will be back as one of the most pleasent Exeter City Pub we have found. Thanks.

Good sized double room above this well located and relatively quiet pub very conveniently located for the city centre. More character than staying at a big chain hotel (though this one is owned by Young's Brewery), friendly staff and good value.
