“July 2012 Weekend Stay”
Reviewed 8 July 2012

We were attending Exeter for a 50 yr olds birthday celebrations. We were welcomed politely and quickly checked in...we were a party of 10. You get a feel of an olde traditional ale house. The bar area has some lovely original features....beyond the bar was a large Victorian 'Stylie" Conservatory...which in turn lead to large gardens. I deal for large groups to meet or entertain. The pond was well stocked with Carpe and somewhat bizarely a turtle the size of a dinner plate. He was named Nigel ?!
We were allocated room 6 which was on the first floor above the conservatory. The room was functional although the ensuite bathroom was tiny and cramped. It really needed the extractor fan to work as it was a fully enclosed area. You could easily hear next doors tv and conversations and the main door had large gaps to top, side and bottom and allowed a lot of light in at night time from the corridor.
Breakfast was traditional and brought to the table quickly. The staff were a little hurried...ie no milk brought to the table for the tea and sugar had to be searched for...but very polite and helpful.
Overall it is fair to say that its location is good for exploring the town and its surroundings. Perhaps about average all round.....not for romantics and more functional than quaint. You are left with a feeling that the property had been worked hard and had seen much better days.
If visiting the town again I would look for better value elsewhere yet would not be too fussed if I had to stay here.

Room Tip: Avoid room 6 !

Stayed here a couple of years ago as we were attending a football match in Bideford but stay in Exeter as it was more conviniant (train from / to London).
The rooms you stay in are located above a lovely real ale pub. you checkin at one end of the bar downstairs.
Our room that we had was spacious and had a fair size bathroom. It was comfy room, ideal for a couple of night.
Breakfast servied downstairs in an area of the pub and was very good.
The pub do evening meals and they were very filling for the second night we ate there. The first night, we arrived late, food finished so walked into the high street, 10 mins ish.
Would stay here again if Exeter way.

Starting with the positive things first: the shower was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful. However the mattress on the double bed had seen much better days 5 years ago, the TV didn't work and the general feel of the place was quite shabby. I stayed during the week so the bar downstairs was fairly quiet, but unless you are going to be staying up until the bar closes, I would not stay at the weekend.

Was in Exeter for one night for a conference so the City Gate was perfectly located for the Central train station, the conference centre and the cathedral and shops. The assistant manager was very attentive and the cooked to order breakfast was tasty. A special mention must go to the head housekeeper who was unbelievably helpful when I managed to flood the bathroom fairly spectacularly!

Stayed here in June for a hen weekend and for the price I could not fault the place. They had made a mistake with our room booking and booked us in a double not a twin but the immediatly sorted it out and gave us the spacious family room.

Location is excellent - walking distance from the town, parking is a bit of a pain but overall a nice place with friendly and helpfull staff

Would stay again and would recommend.

we stayed at the hotel overnight this week,to visit the university open day in town.was booked through Late Rooms, and the best deal i could find, for £55. a twin room,no meals. i had to call them twice before arrival, once to check that they could look after luggage after we had checked out,and were on campus tour. this was happily agreed to.also, the reservation noted that late arrivals should confirm,as room not guaranteed- again, not a problem,we arrived at 8.30pm from london train. so ,the staff were friendly, efficient and welcoming.a big plus- many ''smarter'' hotels should take note! my only criticism was the awful beds! did inform on check out, when asked how was our stay.and duty manager noted it. the mattress was sooo creaky and lumpy, and im sure extremely old. im not a fussy person, but even i had trouble getting ,or staying comfortable. otherwise,a great central location-hard to beat, for town/exeter st davids stn and the streatham campus site. about a ten min walk from the rail station and less then that for cathedral and shops. also,a pretty garden and conservatory, and nice menu.would go back

Room Tip: room 8( at the back) quiet and large, but mattress needs replacing

What a fantastic hidden gem in the centre of a city.
Stayed there due to our friends wedding yesterday, the food at the function was great, my friends and her mum are wheat free and were well catered for too!

The cellar bar where the main party was held at night was a fantastic location, good music, good service and a great time had by all.

Unfortunately the only downside was that the room was rather filthy, the glasses/coffee cups had been clearly just rinsed out in the bathroom and there was thick dust and bulbs not working in the bedroom.

I can honestly say that a very quick chat with the assistant manager resolved everything, she explained about a problem with the cleaners.... Being in the hospitality trade for 12 years I understand completely how that can let you down.

The breakfast had a few mix ups, the wrong order brought out twice (perhaps I shouldn't be so picky?) This was prior to me speaking with the assistant manager anyway, when it came it had the most beautiful poached free range eggs, thick grilled bacon and wonderful butchers sausages!

I will stay here again if there is a function, I will recommend it and hope they sort out the cleaners soon.
