Called in for morning coffee on a day trip to Exeter. Was to
D to take a seat and someone will be with you in a bit. Sat and waited. Nothing. Went to the restroom, joined queue behind 2 other customers returned to table and still had not even been given a menu!
Walked out as they did not deserve my business.

I have visited patisserie Valerie’s many times in the past and always thought of the food as of excellent standard. On a trip to Exeter today having not been for at least eight months I was looking forward to another visit. However, unfortunately today I was left disappointed and dissatisfied, the food was not of the normal standard and it appeared to me as if costs and corners were trying to be cut. Is the business in financial trouble? To pay £10 for a ceaser salad that was seriously lack lustre (that I have had before and been extremely satisfied with ) was very disappointing to say the least, cost is not an issue if the food is of standard and quality. My daughters meal was of equal lack lustre. Go back to the standards of old. As it stands this loyal fan will not be back.

Booked the day before visiting. Not necessary but definitely recommended, especially if (as in our case) providing dietary requirements before arrival. The lady who took our booking and made notes was very pleasant and explained what the each element of the afternoon tea consisted of, then took the time to guide us through availability of options / alternatives, ensuring every aspect of the tea would be suitable. Nothing was too much trouble. The service faultless.
The same can be said for the service on the day. We were welcomed, in no time we were seated and arrangements made for our food & drink based on the notes they had on record. No fuss, no hassle and no complaints from us.
Some sandwiches were served warm, others cold, all freshly prep'd and seemingly made to order. The portions were dainty, but not at the expense of overall, combined portion size of the meal. Suitably filling with a variety of items, much like you'd expect with high tea, mezze or tapas-style food. We both had loose Earl Grey tea. Enough for 3 cups each. Ideal.
The lady who took our initial booking saw us as we were leaving and asked how everything went. We thanked her for a lovely experience and she made a point of saying it will be a pleasure to see us again.
It seems there has been a much different experience expressed in reviews over the last 3 months or so and that's a real shame. We're glad we gave PV a visit (not our first and surely not our last) despite the poor reviews. I'm not sure of the reasons for that, but we can only comment on our own experience, which was nothing but positive. We had a lovely time this afternoon.

Cold food and very expensive but if that was not bad enough we witnessed terrible attitude of one member of staff to 3 lots of customers and if we were not struggling to eat our food we would have left.
The first incident was two people asked for a table to be cleared poor response, secondly a family dame in and asked if they could sit at the back which was empty completely because a child did not like noice told no do they left then a family of 5 were told to sit at a table for 4 even though a large part of the restaurant was empty . When asked to move were told no
With attitudes like this keep away spend your money where you’ll be treated properly and have warm food. We did complain about the cold part of food and it was taken away and fresh brought but unable to eat it. I’m sure the cafe had good reasons for the bad service but any chef should sends out rubbish food needs to be addressed
