Sitting on the sun terrace at the front of the hotel with a beer, looking out on the stunning views, you could be in the South of France. The two rooms we stayed in were clean and comfortable, as were the beds. The first room got quite hot, but it was exceptionally hot weather, and they gave us a fan. The breakfasts and dinners in the lovely restaurant were excellent, as was our final meal in the bar area. The bar and adjoining rooms had a nice ambiance, and were filled with antiques, books, and, er, a Sheep ! You have a short drive to some lovely beaches, and i must say the whole area is beautiful. Good luck to Ron and the staff who were all very friendly, and made us very 'velcome' ! We had a great four days and would certainly return in the future. P.S.- Ron, Dad wanted to know if you could do us a deal on a Twin Superior !

Martin Miller is a plank, however the Tors was an enjoyable stay. If one was to ignore the junk that litters the entire ground floor, the room was spacious and clean. We had a just about sea view and the bathroom was large. Breakfast was ample and well presented, I would recommend a stay here and the views are envious!

We stayed here for a couple of days in June in a room with an unparalleled view and fluffy white towels. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were attentive without being overbearing. Would highly recommend eating in the restaurant as I personally had the best pork belly I've ever had!

After loving it so much here we also booked in to Millers Bistro a few weeks later and the only negative I'll say is the newly refurbished rooms were slightly better there albeit without the amazing view.

Highy recommended.

Third time lucky with his review. My second re-edit ,

The first one received an assertion from the management that we had received a free meal as compensation. This was incorrect. We did not ask for or receive compensation. We have now received a written apology from the manager for saying this. That apology is accepted assuming it isn't repeated in any response again.

The original review:

This could be a good hotel. It's quirky and has a great view. What it needs is a complete refit and good service. Let me qualify that. We went on a Groupon voucher for a very good price and for the money we spent it was a good deal. If we had gone at normal price I would be a mite irritated.

Plus points:

Great views from the terrace.
Restaurant serves an excellent breakfast and the dinner isn't bad either.
Receptionist very helpful and jolly.

Minus points:

Rooms very dated.
Service very erratic.
Problem interacting with some staff because of language difficulties.
Staff poorly trained.

Example: One night we decided to eat on the terrace looking over the sea. This a much simpler menu than the restaurant....basically the bar menu. However to make sure we would have table we booked this on the morning. On the evening we were told the terrace chef was sick and the menu was off. Now, why the restaurant chef wasn't competent to also sort out a simpler menu beats me. Because we had booked we were allowed to eat off the restaurant menu. This was a solution but not really good enough. The menu was little changed from the previous night and if we're going to be able to have a meal why not one on the terrace menu.

Other guests who hadn't booked were not so lucky. They had nothing. Not how a good hotel should operate. Have a real contingency plan in place.

Another example. On our confirmation we were told the pool was not available. Bit of an understatement. It was derelict.

The Tors is now owned by Martin Miller of the Antique Miller family which is why many of the reception rooms are quirky. Now if he just has a few million to spare to refurbish properly this could be a great hotel.

I have rated the hotel with the stars befitting the very good price we paid. Drop it by one or two if paying full price.

My wife and I spent two nights at The Tors on a Groupon deal. The hotel has an imposing location looking over Lynmouth and the views were stunning. We found the eclectic mix of furnishings bizarre, but extremely fascinating. The staff, mostly Polish, were very friendly, efficient and had a good command of English.
There was an air of serenity throughout the hotel, with plenty of areas in which to sit, both indoors and out. Free wifi was available on the Ground Floor, but our Second Floor room was out of range. The room itself was quite spacious and clean, but in need of refurbishment.
Breakfasts were very tasty with plenty of choice. On our first night we dined in the restaurant and our meal was excellent - in the" gourmet tasting" category ! One caveat - the menu was not particularly extensive and seemed to be the same each evening, hence a couple of evenings would be fine, but if one were to book in for a week, for example, then I think one would have to find other restaurants to provide variety.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Tors, found it to be excellent value for monet and would certainly consider staying there again !

first time i have stayed there since martin miller bought it.Although its nice and quirkey it still needs some T L C outside, flower tubs and hanging baskets were not watered while we were there, no one seemed to be doing anything outside. The inside staff were very good and helpful .
We moved on down to the Bath hotel in the harbour at the weekend and that was great as usual.
