We stayed in a conservatory room with a great view. It has a patio door leading to a conservatory which also opens onto a small balcony. Lovely hotel with a nice breakfast, clean, good location. Parking across the road and good food available nearby at the Rock and Le Bistro for your evening meal.

The local gift and craft shops are quite good and not the usual tat.

We would recommend a visit to Shelley's.

Room Tip: Conservatory rooms have good view where you can sit out under cover.

Having moved to the USA 12 years ago I had a very poor view of English B&B's or family hotels. In fact when in the UK I always tried to stay in a chain, and an American one if possible. But i was amazed by my two night stay at Shelleys in Lymouth, Devon in the UK. It was a great. The room (apparently the one that Shelly stayed in during his honeymoon) was spacious and well maintained. The en-suite worked, was clean and was a good size. The owners Jane and Richard were friendly (but not too friendly) and would do anything for you. And more importantly the breakfast menu ROCKED... It is a great hotel and I would recommend it to anyone visiting that area. The location is also fantastic in the little village of Lynmouth which has some great pubs and things to do.

Room Tip: Ask for Shelley's room - it has a great view, but also that history element...

Review:

'Having just lost my Mum, after looking after her for 4 years, I needed a break to gather my thoughts. My partner, John, decided that we should re-visit Shelley's again.
The last time we were there was 10 years ago! Nothing had changed. As you walk in the front door you are greeted by Richard, who doesn't look a day older! Everything is spotlessly clean.

We stayed in a front bedroom with balcony and it was lovely. The views from our room were wonderful and it was so relaxing. Jane cooks a delicious breakfast and there was plenty of choice.
We will certainly be re-visiting Shelley’s again. Thank you Richard and Jane for making us so welcome. '

Booked at short notice for a weekend break. Styled as an hotel, some may regard it more as a B&B as it lacks a restaurant (instead go to Le Bistro just next door - marvelous!). However, if it is a B&B it falls into the luxury, almost boutique category. Spotlessly clean and fragrant throughout and run by a friendly, attentive but by no means over bearing, couple. Lovely comfy lounge and spacious, well-appointed bedroom. Superb breakfast (get there early for a fine sea view). Doubtless because we booked late, our room seemed to be one of only a couple without a sea or river view. Next time we'll make this a must and would recommend you do too, especially as some seem to have a veranda/ balcony. We 'risked' this place rather despite its web site instead of because of it. Must rate as one of the worst sites ever for doing its subject an injustice! Don't be fooled.

Room Tip: Insist on a room with a view!

Lynmouth is an absolutely adorable place accessible by a choice of three exceedingly steep hills or a near-vertical cliff railway. Shelley's hotel is really the jewel in Lynmouth's crown. It is steeped in history as a result of its connections to the poet and, more recently, as a casualty of the disasterous floods in 1952 - although you would never have thought that the building had ever been affected looking at it today. The hotel is situated overlooking the bay at the confluence of two powerful rivers. On an evening stroll we were thrilled to see an otter searching for its dinner on one of the river banks - amazing! There's lots of good walking straight from the hotel's front door. The location really is excellent - the only drawback being the lack of hotel car parking. There is a public car park directly across the road and the hotel can supply permits at £3.50 per 24 hour stay, but it would have been good to have private parking. We stayed in room 8, which was a conservatory room. Despite intermittent rain, the room was hot. It was lovely however, to sit in the dry watching the world go by. The chairs provided were a little too formal for conservatory seating, but cushions had been thoughtfully provided to make things a little more comfortable. The furnishings and decor in room 8 reflect the rest of the hotel and are quite traditional and tasteful. We did find that we both began to suffer from back ache from the bed by night three, although we had slept well on the first night. We found the pillows 'tired' and ready for replacement. Other than this, the room is really comfy. I found the shower a little less so. The bathroom was very snug and I found the shower fitting a bit awkward, but there were lovely fluffy white towels provided and everything is bright and clean. High standards prevail here. The breakfasts are fabulous. The buffet was fairly standard, but cooked breakfasts are well cooked, extremely hearty, imaginative and beautifully presented. This meal will really set you up for the day. There is a very tight window for breakfast - between 8.15 and 9.15 a.m. In addition, it is requested that your room is vacated by 10.30 a.m. if you want it servicing. Whilst it is nice to have the option of not bothering - clean towels and refreshment supplies can be obtained from reception - we thought that the system was very process-led and not guest-led. After all, the reason to choose a hotel rather than self-catering is that you can have a rest from the routine chores. Also, ill health this year has made me a late-starter in the mornings. In the event, we managed okay. All in all though, it is no surprise to find that Shelley's receives consistently good ratings. The hotel is efficiently run, with comfy bedrooms, a very pleasant guest lounge and a lovely breakfast room where wonderful breakfasts are served. We would definitely love to return in the future and would readily recommend Shelley's. We had a brilliant few days here with this lovely hotel as our base.

Room Tip: The conservatory rooms are fantastic when the weather is a bit unpredictable and it is lovely to be...

Stayed at Shelleys one very rainy and blustery day in June. The weather was appalling but Shelleys was so cosy and warm. Our room was immaculate and had a small sun room which led out on to the narrow veranda, just very special. Breakfast was delicious as was our meal the evening before which was in a Bistro just across the road from Shelleys.
Thouroughly enjoyable escape.

Room Tip: On the side with veranda
