“Very nice Hotel.”
Reviewed 24 September 2011

After reading some of the reviews on this sight we were not expecting too much from this break . It is a nice friendly hotel and the menu is very good. Every evening it was hard to choose between several great meals. The Hotel is tired in places, due to its age,but it is clean and comfortable,The staff are very friendly and helpful. The Hotel is very grand, and the property manager was very informative of its history.. A very pretty area/

It was really nice to read your review, the staff in the restaurant are hard working and were happy to read your comments. Thank you

We stayed at this hotel from 16th - 19th September and travelled on a 'Self Drive' break. We were somewhat apprehensive as to what we might find at the hotel given the poor reviews it has received on some review sites. Being seasoned Shearings customers we feel we know what to expect with their short breaks and this one didn't disappoint. Admittedly we paid extra to have a Superior room which came with sea views on this occasion and this certainly was value for money.
Staff in all areas of the hotel were polite and helpful and the dining room staff, in particular, were exceptionally hard working. The food whilst basic was prepared to a reasonable standard and the portion sizes were more than adequate for our needs.
All in all we felt we had good value for money and would certainly return to this hotel in the future if visiting this beautiful area of the country.

Room Tip: Request a room with a sea view and if possible upgrade to a 'Superior' room

We went on a 3 day Shearings break on the 9th to 12th of September, we paid extra for a seaview room which was alright but needed decorating. The breakfasts are mediocre and small portions served with cold toast, which should be called singed bread.
Dinner on Friday consisted of a chicken leg sitting on a slice of beige stuffing(sage & onion allegedley). The meals on Saturday and Sunday where a little better.
The dining room staff are very good, however the courses came thick and fast so no time for a leisurely meal here.
The entertainment or lack of it! On previous visits to Shearing hotels the entertainment manager would normally fill in on Friday and Sundays with a quiz some songs or jokes etc and there would be a professional act for Saturday night, now I fear cutbacks are in place with guests left to their own devices on Friday and Sunday evenings. In fact the lounge looked like gods waiting room with people sitting round reading etc. The artist provided on Saturday did a little singing but mostly padded his time with two quizzes and general chat. Linton has little to do at night, surely something could be done.

My self and my wife visited this hotel over the weekend of 9th to 12th of september on one of shearings special 3 day deals of £99 per person for the 3 days ,so we were not expecting 5 star luxury. We were however pleasantly surprised, our room was comfortable with a sea view , and while neeing some decorating was perfectly acceptable. The only drawbacks with the room were ,it only had a bath,[no shower], and the miniscule tv could only recive 5 channels, this did not bother us as we did not go to wath tv!.Food in the hotel whilst pretty basic was acceptable ,and prepared to a decent standard, and due to getting three courses at dinner always seemed enough. All of the staff in the hotel were very freindly, and thedining room staff in particular were very hard working.I cannot comment on the supplied entertainment as we found a pub in the village we really liked,[the Crown] and spent our eveninings in there. The hotel building is quite impressive and must have looked magnificient once but now looks slightly run down and in need of some decoration, however it is still warm and comfortable. To sum up we found thehotel quite nice and would reccomend it to anyone looking for a rasonable place to stay, and not expecting luxury. This is the first time we have used a Bay hotel ,and I think we would use them again.

Room Tip: book a sea view room

We were very dissapointed with the hotel and the qualitiy of the food, first breakfast that I ordered was egg bacon and tomato,Igot one small rasher of bacon and an egg that looked like it had just come out of a joke shop window with two small pieces of tomato and cold toast.
The evening meal was not much better a small chickin leg and two small trays of veg, boiled potatoes and roast (very dry) potatoes.both days of meals were very poor.
The TV was no bigger than a postage stamp and did not have a signal.so you could not watch it anyway.
The hotel needs a good make over in all areas, there was evan water marks on our bed room ceiling and paper peeling of the walls,
Booked through Shearings I was very surprised at the quality of the package.

the hotel down stairs was nice in its self lounge very buetiful. however the standard rooms are very basic and could do with paint including the corridoors. the shower didnt work on the second day and didnt for the rest of are stay so had to use are friends shower next door. food in the restaurant was a good variaty of food but on some nights it didnt seem to be fresh. the breakfast was excellent everyday. the dinning staff was very polite and friendly but seemed to be over worked it was as if they was running round the resturant. the bar manager and james the night porter very friendly and helpfull. entertainment on tuesdays and thursday nights was brill dave huges a singer and keyboard player very entertaining and really funny. wednesdays verry boring entertainment. housekeeping staff amazing if clothes was on the floor they'd fold them neatly in a pile and place on your bed. there isnt very much to do in lynton so wouldnt advise the young generation to go there. we was on a mystery holiday and the youngest there so didnt enjoy the area as much as we would of if we'd have been to skegness or blackpool. but the sight are great.

Room Tip: the rooms was cleaned by roomkeepings and was great. but it could do with a little upgrade and abit...

Having read previous reviews, we were very concerned about staying at the Valley of the Rocks but there was no need. We found our break was excellent value for money. As we nomally do, we booked a Superior room - well worth paying the extra. We could not fault the staff - very friendly and helpful. The food was what we would expect, apart from a whitebait starter which was, sadly, overcooked. We will be back.

Room Tip: I would suggest upgrading to a Superior room.
