“nice easter break”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

travelled with shearings for an easter break,. first of all let me say we booked this holiday on the afternoon of the 1/o4/14 and got the last two seats but no mention from the booking people that the hotel had the winter vomiting bug but a phone call to customer services(susan) was very open and honest about it and putme in touch with booking (michele) who tried to find us something else or could we go on an alternative date but we couldnt and the only venue available was morcombe which we didnt want to go so we went to linton and hoped for the best. we did have a nice week end had room 52 which had a view of the bay tv was a bit intermintant and first morning there we had no hot water but this was explained by reception that if we were the first to run the water it comes from cellar and takes its time to get warm.the staff are very friendly and helpfull the hotel is tired our room was ok a little bit of paint flaking on ceiling.food is ok . not a lot to do at night in linton hotal does have entertainment be didnt watch it.thanks to our driver geoff. big problem going with traffic hold ups

Room Tip: be aware some rooms are over the entertainment so could be noisey ours was nice and quite

A friendly hotel in a great location. Lynton is a lovely place with Lynmouth situated below it. A great walk along the river to Watersmeet. The hotel would have been very splendid in Victorian times and many of its beautiful features are still visible. We had a refurbished room with a sea view which was clean and adequate. There was entertainment every night. The food was good but unfortunately I was taken ill on the last night as were several other guests.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room with a sea view.

There is no doubt that this well situated hotel offers very good value for money but there are some small but nevertheless significant failures that detract. For example our room had recently been refurbished and looked excellent until we came to use the bathroom. An older bath without any shower attachment meant that had to borrow an old fashioned shower hose to use for a shower. A new television complete with subtitles frequently failed to workk because of a weak signal. The food was adequate and served by very friendly and efficient staff but the fact that the menu was reduced by several factors did not help.

Room Tip: Book early if you want to park at the hotel as the walk from the car park is not easy for over seven...

We are pleased that your holiday “was good value for money” and that the restaurant staff were “very friendly and efficient”
The public car park can be reached by a short footpath, approximately 50 metres from the hotel.
We agree that our hotel is well situated in the middle of Lynton, and the refurbished rooms do “look excellent”, some have walk in showers, some have a bath with a shower over and a few just have a bath.
Thank you Paul Quest for leaving your comments, we hope you will visit us again in the future.

I stayed on a three night break with my walking club. I thought it was very good value for money and all the staff were absolutely excellent. However, the hotel was shabby and needs a good lick of paint and maintenance.

The room I stayed in was very shabby with paint peeling off and the power socket was hanging off the wall. The television did not work and the toilet did not flush on the last day. I also found my room to be very small.

The breakfasts were plentiful and good. The evening meals were reasonable. The restaurant staff were very friendly and efficient.

I think the hotel could do better if it was painted and maintained properly.

Room Tip: Please go for a superior room.

Lovely area good location. Unfortunately, like many other guests, from the coach trip who stayed here, both myself and my husband were ill and unable to enjoy the area as we had planned. Glad to be home and recovering from the experience.

Dear Helen J,

I am sorry that you and your husband’s recent stay with us was affected by illness.

As you may be aware from media reports, there is currently a national increase in the incidence of a gastrointestinal illness caused by Norovirus, commonly referred to as the “winter vomiting bug”.
Norovirus is the most common cause of infectious diarrhoea and vomiting in the UK. The infection is much more common in the winter months, but it can occur at other times of the year.
Norovirus is very widespread, second only to the common cold in the number of cases reported. Up to 1 million people in the UK are thought to be affected by Norovirus every year.

Even though the initial symptoms of sickness and diarrhoea can be quite severe, fortunately most people recover rapidly, generally within 24-48 hours.

Our hotel has comprehensive cleaning procedures that have been agreed with our local health services to deal with any outbreaks should they occur, but we do rely on the assistance of guests to ensure that these controls are fully effective. As the virus is spread easily from person to person, one of the simplest preventative measures everybody can take is to ensure that hands are washed frequently and thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.

Unfortunately it only takes one person infected with the virus to spread the disease, which is why outbreaks are especially common in hospitals, nursing homes and, as in our case, hotels.

We hope that you both made a fast and full recovery.

We stayed at the hotel on a Shearings Coach Holiday and only booked a few days before so got a bargain price. Taking that into account we weren’t too disappointed to get a room (84) that hadn’t been refurbished as it was clean, comfortable and warm, but with paint peeling off the door and doorframe and the bathroom especially looking rather tatty, it is time it had a refurbishment and it would have been nice to have a shower instead of a bath. Breakfasts were very good but the evening meals a bit hit and miss, but the desserts were always very nice. The staff were very pleasant and the waiters and waitresses worked very hard bustling around. There was free wi-fi if you registered with icloud – telephone reception was very bad. There was always a quiz followed by a different entertainer in the evening who we felt were very good, and a couple of evenings there was Bingo as well. We went on an included trip to Dartington Crystal which was worth going on and we enjoyed the cream tea, although it would have been better to go in an afternoon as we were still full after our big breakfast to eat a large scone with jam and cream, although we did manage it! We had a short stay of 45 mins in Minehead for the other tour and then on to Dunster, and we just had time for a quick visit to the Castle as we are National Trust members. Fortunately we didn’t go down with the sicky bug which some of the other people did.
