“Great base for local travel”
Reviewed 30 August 2010

We had a 4 night stay here. The room was clean and bed reasonable. The whole hotel is due for a re vamp in January, so it did look a little tired and out dated. The staff were friendly, but not overly helpful! The food was as I read before rather "school dinner", brought out with military precision, but as you have your own table during your stay, you never feel rushed, just learn to eat slowly! The entertainment was not that bad as the "mature" audience were a tough crowd to please. This is a hotel catering for more senior clients. When the hotel is re done in January they will be no entertainment and there is not a lot more to do in an evening in Lynton! You can not rely on the the television as it was not working during our stay. It was good value for money and we enjoyed our stay.

Stayed here for a long weekend, 3 nights for the price of 2. We have stayed at several Shearings hotels but must say that we didn't feel that this one was quite up to the usual standard,a little on the well used and tired side, however the location certainly made up for that and we will probably go back at some stage.
The hotel was very quiet and the food was good with quick service and a good choice of menu. Entertainment was the usual bingo and quizzes although the singer/comedian on one night was very entertaining.
The surrounding area and scenery is stunning and well worth a visit.
A thoroughly enjoyable weekend and with it being on offer, great value for money, just don't expect anything too fancy.

This is my second visit to this hotel,my reasons are it has a old time feel to it and the staff make you feel very welcome. Parking is limited which is not helped by two abandoned cars however the hotel issues parking permits for the local car parks. The food is exellent and plenty of it ,the restaurant staff work very hard to please. I was satisfied with my room and room service. Overall for a budget holiday the value is second to none regardless of the whingers who complain about anything, ( a quote made to me on this stay is they pay Woolworths prices & expect Harrods quality ). I make this review as honest as I can and would most definetly use Shearings again

Another warm welcome on arrival at this hotel. All the staff were very attentive. The food was very good with a good choice of menu ; bedroom was spotless and the entertainment very enjoyable - hosted by the friendly and professional entertainments manager.
A recent innovation of mid-day bar snacks provided excellent value.
We enjoyed this weekend so much that we have already booked our next break with them!

Just returned from a 5 day break to this hotel with my sister. I was a little aprehensive of what to expect. The room was on the first floor with a nice sea view. It had a new bathroom which was clean & everything worked, nice clean white towels- although the room was a bit small it had everything we needed & the beds were extremely comfortable.
The staff could not be faulted, especially in the dining room.- could not do enough for you. . The food was basic fare-reasonable choice and nice. Okay, the hotel could do with " doing up" in certain areas- it is a lovely building and would really benefit from this- and a good hoover on the stairs and air freshener would not go amiss!- The biggest shame is the garden- looking at it from our room it looked lovely- but unfortunately when you get down there it is sadly neglected- with a bit of TLC it could be a wonderful hotel- it is in a nice village of Lynton- and the surrounding countryside is beautiful!!

The hotel is tired and the staff are not bothered. We asked for quiet room up high. We got a room over front door. The music shuddered through the whole hotel until gone 11pm. You could not read or watch tv, yet there were only approx 20 people in the lounge out of the 100+ guests. The food was good basic fare and the restaurant staff much more attentive and eager to please. The reception staff often didn't even bother to look up from the front desk when you came in or out. No help offered, just 'we're fully booked'. Our bathroom was not cleaned on the second day and I have no idea when the floor was last hoovered yet alone the carpet cleaned. Yuk.

My parents had already booked a coach holiday to this hotel and after spending the day with them I decided to see if a single room was available for the night. I was lucky as a cancellation was available for dinner, bed and breakfast for £35, en suite, with a lovely sea view. The room was small and basic but but clean with tea and coffee facilities, wardrobe and tv. The evening meal consisted of 3 courses with a reasonable choice, though nothing fancy, and tea or coffee to follow. The breakfast was better and included porridge as one of the healthy options. The hotel caters to older peope but I would recommend it also to walkers of all ages who want a budget break - the coastal path is literally on your doorstep and there are plenty of lovely circular walks nearby including Watersmeet and the Vallley of the Rocks itself.
