“A marvellous experience”
Reviewed 28 June 2013

We booked at the last minute having had some good news from husband's Consultant at hospital. So, as a means of small celebration, we decided to go away for a few days. We booked on line with no experience of the hotel or the area really. We felt we had fallen on our feet! Lovely house. Lovely room. Fantastic views. Weather a bit iffy for first day but didn't stop us enjoying the area. Some great walks. We loved Mike and Karen and, as dog lovers, we also got to have a cuddle with the family dog! We phoned after booking to say that I am a coeliac and have to live a gluten free life. No problem. Gluten free bread, gluten free cake, gluten free sausages for breakfast. That sort of service is very unusual in even the top hotels around the world. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. No hesitation in recommending Highcliffe House.

Highcliffe House in Lynton, Exmoor National Park, Devon, England is one of the most divine B&B's we have ever had the pleasure of staying. Everything was perfection! The rooms are large and extremely well-appointed and decorated. Karen and Mike couldn't have been better hosts - in fact it felt like we were family. Breakfasts were so well prepared that we didn't want the meal to end. Mike is extremely knowledgeable about Devon and is more than willing to share his knowledge. Karen is warm and friendly and always willing to help out with suggestions. The views from the bedrooms are absolutely stunning. There are wonderful pubs for evening meals in the area. We cannot wait to return to Highcliffe House!

Room Tip: Myrtleberry and Summerhouse are the best rooms with the greatest views.

Booked at short notice, this B&B has fantastic views over the bay. Its up a steep hill from Lynton town centre.
Rooms were lovely, breakfast plentiful - you order the night before to avoid waste, but its cooked when you go down for breakfast. Views from the conservartory are stunning. Easy access for walking to Watersmeet - great place to visit.
Had complimentary afternoon tea on arrival, loved the scones, jam & cream!
There is a honesty bar in lounge - great touch. Lovely relaxing lounge area, and some seating outside for the sunny days.
Run by couple; Karen & Mike who were very welcoming, and gave advice on places to walk to.

Room Tip: Treat yourself to a sea view, well worth the extra!

Thanks for leaving this lovely review for Karen & Mike. Highcliffe House is under new ownership and there's been some great changes to the house. We've added a new garden terrace which overlooks Lynton and the beautiful Exmoor coastline.

We hope to see you again in Lynton one day - it is the most beautiful location for walking and exploring. And remember to book direct with us to ensure you're getting the best possible price for your stay.

We recently stayed in this very clean bed and breakfast hotel. We were met by Karen who was very welcoming and had stated to make ourselves at home, she gave us a key and I enquired
whether we could come and go as we pleased and asking if their was any restrictions. She answered no and also mentioned about the bar they have in their lounge area and that we could purchase drinks from them. No mention of the lounge area being locked and the lights being turned off a certain time. However on our first night here, we returned from a night out and chatted with other guests in the lounge area and a man appeared started turning off lights and
not introducing himself as Karen's husband. I had to assume this by his obvious actions to hurry
us of of the lounge. Not a good way to start the holiday, we found him abrupt at breakfast and impatiently waiting for us to finish. We felt rushed by him at all times and only on our last day was his manner acceptable. We won't be returning here as it was clear he hated doing his job.
What a shame for Karen, we think she should employ a person to replace Mike front of house
as his clearly does not have the right disposition for the job.

The cleaning staff however our thorough and very polite and very informative of the local area.
Karen is extremely good at cooking the breakfasts and really apart from Mike the whole stay would have been faultless.

Thanks for leaving this for Karen & Mike, the previous owners. Highcliffe House is under new ownership and there's been some great changes to the house. We can assure you that the guest areas of Highcliffe are now never locked, nor are the lights switched off. We want our guests to feel they can come and go as they please, like a home away from home.

Again, we would like to assure you that breakfast is an entirely new experience at Highcliffe. Our guests are encouraged to relax and enjoy our award winning breakfast whilst taking in the incredible views over Lynton and the Exmoor coastline.

We hope to see you again in Lynton one day - it is the most beautiful location for walking and exploring. And remember to book direct with us to ensure you're getting the best possible price for your stay.

If you are thinking of getting away to Exmoor and the North Devon coast and want a bit of luxury, stay at Highcliffe House. My husband and I have just returned and we both hope to stay there again soon.

We stayed in the exquisite Countisbury Room. The rooms are spotlessly clean (and this is coming from a clean freak), are beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you could want or need and the views are spectacular.

Karen and Mike are so welcoming, friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make your stay a pleasure. Thanks to Mike for the advice on great walks. We completed a walk from Woolacombe beach to Baggy Point on the hottest day of the year so far, the scenery was breathtaking.

Breakfast at Highcliffe is something foodies dream of: a fantastic mouth-watering variety is available, freshly served and piping hot, and the fresh bread is to die for. Thank you Karen for your bread making tips!

I cannot recommend the Highcliffe enough for its high standard!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a few days and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We stayed in Countisbury which was very tastefully decorated, had a wonderfully comfy bed and a fantastic view out to the coast (and Wales!).

Karen and Mike were very welcoming and friendly - they went out of their way to help with our niggling issues but left us to our own devices - we felt like welcome house guests more than paying customers.

And the breakfast was fantastic - a perfect start to the day that often meant we didn't need to eat much more!

The only thing I would say is that you shouldn't expect to stay in the room all day when it's cold outside or plan to have a hot relaxing bath in the afternoon - the heating is turned off to save energy... but that's perfectly admirable and not at all a fault, just needed a bit of forward planning for our lazy days.

Can also recommend a horse-riding trip as the perfect way to see Exmoor!

On behalf of the previous owners, Karen and Mike, thank you for taking time to write such a lovely review. Just a note about the heating, under the new management, during cold periods the heating and hot water is always available to guests. This is the wrong place to feel cold, we want Highcliffe House to feel comfortable and cosy at all times.
