“Breathtaking views and fabulous service!”
Reviewed 10 May 2014 via mobile

We recently stayed here just for a couple of nights for my partner's 40th Birthday and were very pleased we did! On entering our room the views were simply breathtaking. Almost immediately we decided we would definitely be back for longer next time!

The owner had given me some good advice previously on how to arrange a special something to be waiting for us in the room for my partner's big day. Exmoor Flowers, just one minute walk from the hotel, did a wonderful job and the owner's assistance could not have been better and was much appreciated. His speed of response to my initial request for help via email a few weeks before our stay was phenomenal!!

The room had a large, really comfy four-poster bed, wardrobe, desk, flat screen tv on the wall and a couple of chairs which was all we needed. Everything was clean and well maintained. The shower was a good pressure and the towels white and fluffy. What more could you ask for? I stay in a lot of hotels (never less than four star) with my work (3 or 4 times a month) and so am not easily impressed. The Lynton Cottage Hotel impressed me hugely. The owner even let us have a look at a couple of unoccupied rooms to give us a better feel for the hotel with a view to bringing family here for my 40th next year - there is nowhere else I'd rather spend it.

Now, breakfast... What can I say? Other than: "6 stars"!!! The waitress was fantastic and the food delicious. I had a full English one day and eggs benedict the next and am already looking forward to our next stay to try other options. It was all cooked beautifully and tasted superb and I really do mean superb.. There was also a selection of yogurts and cereals as well as juices and tea and coffee and lovely toast!! The breakfasts set us up perfectly for the day ahead. I would like to mention the service again too as it was truly top class: calm, efficient and friendly. We didn't get the waitress' name but she was fabulous!

The location of the hotel is second to none. You literally walk down the drive and are in amongst the delights of Lynton and just round the corner from the funicular railway to Lynmouth or you can walk it, as we did, taking in the stunning views on the way. I love this part of the world and it makes me so proud to be English when I see what this great country can offer the world. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Friendly, helpful staff. Breathtaking (there's that word again!) views. Super comfy rooms. Delicious breakfast (we didn't have dinner so can't comment but the menu looked excellent!). Fantastic location. Total peace apart from the sea... What more could you ask for? We have already booked for four nights in September and are planning our next stay after that. We may even pop down again before September for a three night break as the hotel has great offers available for certain dates so why not?!! I sound like I'm on commission - I'm not!!! I just love this place.

If you want wild nights out and late night drinking in the bar then this is not the place for you and nor should it be - and what are you doing in Lynton in the first place??!!! And those that have complained about that aspect are surely missing the point. This had everything we needed and more and we can't wait to get back on the M5 and head south!!

Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so special.

We recently stayed during the May Day Bank holiday. Our third visit to the Hotel. We had the Sanford Room which is very big, and has a fantastic wooden Four Poster bed. Beautiful views out of the window, that looks directly out over the Bay. We had dinner in the Restaurant and had a sea view table. The menu has a good collection of fish courses. The staff were very polite and helpful, and we will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: If the weather is reasonable open a window and let the sea breeze in.

This was a last minute booking for the purpose of allowing my wife a short break following an operation, and overall it certainly helped her recuperation. The fantastic views from the room, the wonderfully comfortable bed, and the peaceful location all combined to make a relaxing few days.
The breakfasts were excellent, served by friendly waitresses. On our first morning the proprietor was annoyingly 'hovering' as he appeared to be supervising a new young waitress, who was obviously struggling with a lack of English and confidence - on a number of occasions he was getting very irritated and snatching her pad off her to rewrite orders. This was very embarrassing for her, and indeed for ourselves, and a more patient and understanding attitude would no doubt have been more rewarding!
The evening meals were of a good standard. However, we had to book a table before going out, and had to pre-order starters and mains before 5pm. This effectively meant we had to order in the morning, as there was no guarantee that we would be back by 5pm - this felt quite restricting - the reason given was to ensure adequate supplies of fresh fish, which seemed to us to be rather silly if non-fish dishes were required. We like to make our decisions on what we eat when sitting at the table and looking at the menu - what might seem ideal at 10am does not necessarily retain it's appeal at 7pm!!
The bar opened at 5pm, closed at 10.30pm, with last orders at 10pm. Again, if we had been out for the evening and felt like a nightcap at 11pm., not at all late when being on holiday, then we would have been disappointed.
Our room was comfortable and well furnished - the large bed was itself a lovely piece of furniture, and the mattress excellent. We both had three very restful nights' sleep. The proprietor was very prompt in responding to a request for a bath mat, and also in repairing the plug-chain in the hand basin. He also provided a vase for flowers that my wife had taken with her.
Overall, we enjoyed our short break, and would stay there again, but probably not have the evening meal. Times for breakfast, evening meals and bar opening are fairly restrictive, and in our opinion seem arranged for the proprietor's needs rather than the guests!

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have sea views, and are very quiet, and very comfortable.

Thank you for your comments. Your feedback is helpful in monitoring our Guest expectations. Lynton is a popular destination because of its scenery, tranquillity and its remoteness from the big cities. But this very attraction also compromises the level of facilities available in the area. As a rural village with a small population, all Hotels and Restaurants are relatively small, and methods of operation differ greatly from those in larger population centres. It is common practice for Restaurants to open for pre-bookings only, and for latest sittings to be 8pm. Before June or after September, many Restaurants will only open for part of the week. Our aim is to provide a service that will suit the majority of our Guests. We are evolving our practices, and there is no hard or fast rule about pre-ordering meals. But in order to offer food 7 days a week, with twice the number of main course options compared to our competitors, it is necessary to maintain some parameters. We also cater to Hotel residents only. We do advertise this clearly in advance, as well as the Bar opening hours. Unfortunately, one man's nightcap is another man's late drinking session. We have found the times of operation to be acceptable to the majority of our Guests. Consequently, we also enjoy a zero complaint level regards noise. This cannot be said for some of our competitors. Thank you again for your feedback, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future. regards Bill

Originally planned this hotel and local area as a stop on the way to St.Ives. Enjoyed the stay so much that decided to stay on for two extra nights. If you like walking, spectacular views and a hearty breakfast this in the hotel for you. Well done to the new owner and delightful staff who have created a pleasant atmosphere.

we have just returned from a 6 day break at the Lynton cottage hotel.lovely little hotel with lots of character and stunning sea views.Bill [the owner]and his staff, were all very friendly and made us feel very welcome throughout our stay.Breakfast was excellent, good choice and perfectly cooked. Our room was very comfortable with a beautiful four poster bed as its focal point,it also had a little balcony where you could sit and look at the fantastic sea view. The hotel is in a fabulous location with plenty of stunning walks, especially valley of the rocks, which is breathtaking. The route from Lynton to Lynmouth is very steep but there is a cliff railway giving access. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Lynton cottage hotel and would definitely return.
