Chough's Nest Hotel

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 September 2011

The hotel is located on the side of a very steep hill between Lynton and Lynmouth, at the end of a road that becomes a cliff path. Very quiet and with a fantastic view. The room was spacious, provided with all facilities that I would expect and very clean.

The hotel is quite traditional in a number of ways; it has a comfortable communal lounge with a longcase clock in the corner, a spacious and carefully laid out dining room, and a number of antique furniture pieces around the building. The soft furnishings in the room could be also be described as traditional - some might call them old fashioned - but not old. They all appeared to be new or nearly new. One of the pieces of furniture had a mark on its surface (damaged presumably by a previous occupier) but this was the only fault I could find.

The food was excellent, both at breakfast and evening meal. They need advance notice for evening meal (before 11am I think) and I would recommend booking for this at least once.

The service, however, is the most unusual and refreshing aspect of this hotel. The owners go out of their way to welcome guests and provide a level of service above and beyond what is necessary for the business. This is especially visible in the meals provided, with the best ingredients and a table service that is as good as anywhere.

I've stayed at a range of hotels over the past couple of years - from no stars to several - but this hotel stands out. It may not be to everyone's taste; for contemporary style, buffet breakfasts, gyms & nightlife, go somewhere else. Personally, I prefer the Chough's Nest.

Our experience at Choughs Nest has continued to improve under the management of John and Rose and their family. The food is excellent and the rooms redesigned to be stylish and comfortable. We have spent many happy times there and no matter how many times we visit we never want to leave the hotel or the surrounding area which is outstandingly beautiful. When staying at the Chough you can forget the car as it stands on the coastal path. and can walk to the stunning valley of the rocks and beyond depending on your level of fitness. Keep up the good work and we, of course, will be back.

We had a really good three night stay. Service was very helpful and friendly without being intrusive. It's a pity trip advisor doesn't rate the food. Both breakfasts and evening meals were excellent. Very good vegetarian menu as well, much better than most places offer. We came away rested, relaxed and very well fed.

This little family run hotel is superb. The owners go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible even running you to places instead of getting the bus at no extra charge. This is the nicest place we have stayed in Room was superb Beds very comfy and spotlessly clean. The food was gorgeous with a varied menu so you could have something different every night. Best breakfast ever.

We have stayed in this hotel many times. The current owners who have been here five years, work as a family and make the stay a very pleasant one. They are friendly and knowledgable about the area. The food is very good indeed and the hotel is very comfortable and clean. All the bedrooms have exceptional views as does the dining room. We particularly like the fact that you really don't have to use the car as there are splendid walks in all directions. Plenty of car parking space.

Room Tip: We stayed in room three which was great.

Stayed here for a long weekend to do some walking and relaxing.
Room had amazing sea views, was large and spacious and very clean and tidy. It was one of the best rooms i have stayed in!
Service at breakfast and dinner was first class and the owners made you feel incredibly welcome and at home. Food and service matched a top restaurant.
Advice on walking and routes was spot on.
Could not fault anything. Must stay here if looking in Devon!
