Pine Lodge Guest House
Ranked #5 of 23 Lynton B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 June 2009

This is our second stay at this B+B. we like it because of the quiet location and easy walking into lynton town along a traffic free path. Since we first stayed the owners have changed and the rooms are now upstairs instead of downstairs. I think the bedrooms themselves are now nicer. Sadly the cosy lounge from the old times is used by the hosts themselves and there is a smaller lounge next to the breakfast room for guests but this is nowhere near as nice.
The new owners only took over the property three weeks before we stayed and one is originally from norway so I hope she can bring some nordic touches to make this place nicer. The beds were small and british "small double size" at about 130x190. this is a bit too tight for two and my feet especially stuck out the end. The room would easily cope with a 160x200 from Ikea (or better still two singles put together as needed to make double/twin).
The plumbing was typically british and the hot water was set to be incredily hot. This is no fun when there are two separate taps in the sink and makes it mandatory to put the plug in and mix some water in the bowl to wash your hands (which I find a bit tedious and also unhygenic). Ventilation was poor. The "fan" in the bathroom had a movement sensor which meant it stopped when you were in the shower since the curtain blocked it's view of you.. But anyway when I put my hand in front of the fan I could not fell any air actually going past so I doubt much air was flowing. This would explain the rivers on condensation on the mirrors, windows and anything from my bathroom bag. Having the heating go off at night did not help, since the bathroom got cold and made even more condensation on everything. The room itself was a bit cold when we arrived but the heating was on - although in british style the radiators were too hot to touch while on, but went off during the night. OK, for brits this is nothing unusual, but living in finland where we have cosy but well ventilated houses and bathrooms we are used to something better.
Breakfast was nice - the room is big and plenty of space although the food was supermarket bought with individual portions of packed jam (since one place on our stay had homemade jams and marmelades were noticed this point).
There were many signs and notices around - this really felt like a commercial seaside B+B and not like someone's cottage that you are staying in, I suspect they are from the previous owners and perhaps some could be taken down (do we really need a reminder to put the shower curtain inside the bath?). TV in the bedroom was quite old and novel to see that old fashioned "portable" tv in this age of 19" widescreen LCD tv's.
Driving in/out was ok if you are really skilled with parking since the driveway is steep and reversing in/out somewhat tricky. Don't try it with a big BMW !
The hosts were friendly and it was nice to chat with them, especially since we had nordic backgrounds in common.
Location was great - 10mins walk to the centre of lynton but well back from the road with great views of the valley and no traffic noise.
