“Beatiful but worn old hotel”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

Very nice old building from the outside. The rooms and the interior a bit worn. Had to wait long time for a prawn sandwich at 10 pm. Traffic noice through the one glass window. Choose rooms at the backside of the hotel if possible. But a lot of charm in this 140 year old hotel.

We stayed here for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We booked the Tower Room. The check in was hassle free. When we arrived at our room via our own staircase the room was breathtaking. We thought we had a 180 degree view of Plymouth but then we found another door which lead to two more floors up into the Tower itself there we had a 360 degree view around Plymouth an over Plymouth Sound which was stunning. On the first of these floors there was memorabilia from earlier years of the hotel which was very interesting and on the top floor there were seats and binoculars to take advantage of the views.
We had a evening meal at the hotel which was excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed here for a three night break in August 2014, B & B deal and came away rather disappointed.
The hotel from the outside looks fantastic, but that can't be said for the inside.
When we arrived to check in, we weren't told where the breakfast room was or times etc.
We were on the 4th floor. The room was a lovely size but was freezing cold.
There is no double glazing and the draft comes through, well it did whilst we were there.
We had issues with the hot water. We had to leave taps running for five minutes before any hot water came through.
I went to reception about this and was told its normal as the water comes up from the boiler in the basement... Hmmm
The carpets throughout need a deep clean and the rooms need refurbishing big time.
There is parking, but limited to 29 spaces. We were lucky and had a space for the duration of our stay.
The breakfast is lovely though and I would recommend the full English, but there is a continental buffet to. Lots to choose from.
We also had a lunch there and again this was lovely.
The hotel location is ok as it's only a five min walk to the shops and a five min walk to the harbour. We spent lots of time at the harbour as there is some great bars and restaurants there.
At the end of our stay we checked out and didn't get asked if we enjoyed our stay or anything. We just got the bill and thanks.

We stayed just one night for a Cornwall visit. The hotel is very beautiful, nice, clean and with an old and fancy decoration, still remember the hotel old times. Parking is just behind the hotel with an easy access to the first floor. The breakfast was a little expensive but good quality.

I and my partner visited Plymouth to see family who live there and enjoyed a fabulous dinner in the hotel restaurant. Our double en-suite room on the 3rd floor was aired and very clean. Had a slight problem with delay in getting hot water but this was managed well by the Management and they were very kind to us the next morning. Lovely beautifully cooked breakfast before we departed.

Room Tip: Traffic noise reduced if on higher floors due to original windows being retained (character)

This is an old hotel, indeed it is celebrating 150 years' of trading soon. It therefore looks like so many old-fashioned, dated and past-it "grand" hotels. But it isn't when you get inside. The staff are first class, the decor is fresh (although not all to my taste!), and overall it gave the impression of a hotel being well run and well maintained.

We went to an evening wedding party and, despite having a bit of a problem finding the right room, we were dealt with very professionally throughout. The evening do was in a small bar downstairs and excellent, with a good buffet provided. They had catered well for our friends' marriage earlier in the day and they couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome and part of the event.

The bedroom room was beautiful with a nice small seating /lounge area with the TV and an excellent bathroom. The water took quite a while to run hot but being on the 4th floor perhaps had something to do with that. It looked out over Plymouth and, although on a fairly busy road, we were not bothered by noise at all. The first rate bed and pillows (an unusal find in many hotels) made the night seem all too short.

Breakfast was also first class. An exellent selection of seemingly freshly cooked food as well as the usual self-service for fruit, cereals etc. Very quick service and overall an excellent short stay.

Downsides - small car park although on-street parking is plentiful and mainly free at the times you might want to use it, only one lift for 4 people which might cause problems when very busy.

If I was going back to Plymouth this would certainly be high on my preferred hotel list.

Room Tip: We paid a little extra for the luxury room but it was superb.

We stayed here for two nights to attend the British Firework Championships and left completely satisfied with every part of our stay. Our very large spacious room with separate seating area was clean, well presented and bright with the benefit of two televisions. The bathroom was fully equipped and clean with all the little extras you might wish for, we had a bath and separate shower. The staff were friendly and polite and delivered an excellent breakfast service given that the hotel was full and it seemed like every guest arrived to dine at the same time. Well done .... I have no doubt we shall be returning again next year
