“A Surprising Discovery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2013

Like many others, we discovered the Elizabethan Gardens almost by accident shortly after we moved to live in Plymouth. Now we usually pass through on our way from the Barbican New Street to the Royal Citadel and the Hoe. Strangers could easily miss the entrance, which is via a short alley between buildings at either end, and the gardens are closed during the winter period. When open they present a delightful sanctuary when the Barbican areas is busy with visitors and the volunteers work hard to keep them tidy, well-planted and litter-free. Not a great horticultural gem, perhaps, but well worth a visit.

“Don't miss these gardens”

These are tucked away, so don't miss them. They are tranquil and relaxing but so close to the busy harbour.

Lovely sheltered oasis behind the bars and pubs on the barbican. Highly recommend for American visitors as has a plaque enumerating the names and occupations of the mayflower pilgrims- very interesting. Good example of Elizabethan knot garden.
