It's a beautiful sunny Bank Holiday Sunday and most of Plymouth seem to be spending the day drinking on the Barbican. People were dressed appropriately for the weather. Very much a T-shirt type day. So, what happens when day turns into night? The Dairy opens. The 4 of us had been for a meal and a few drinks and then we arranged to meet a large group of work colleagues at The Dairy for a leaving party.

The 4 of us arrived at the bar only to be turned away as 2 of us were wearing flip flops. It had been a warm summers day. The ladies in our group were dressed the same as hundreds of others that day. I should point out that we could see several people inside the bar wearing flip flops too. So why were WE turned away?

To treat prospective customers in such a way is unacceptable. We were part of a larger group of people and had we been admitted then perhaps the 20 of us might have stayed for a few hours. As it was, my group of work colleagues left almost immediately afterwards.

As two sets of mid thirties couples we had a couple of glasses of wine with our meal on the barbican then headed over to the Dairy to meet some younger work colleagues for a leaving do.
On arrival the place was half full but clearly we weren't welcome. We were refused entry on the grounds that our partners were wearing sandals and it was a health and safety issue. Looking through the doors most women were wearing the same footwear. Surely if it's a safety issue they shouldn't be in there? Apparently the younger women had already entered before they deemed it a risk so could stay. Our night was ruined by blatant ageism.

We stumbled across this little bar on a company night out. We are not local to Plymouth but after a full day of team building activity and getting a little lost in the streets of Plymouth, we were delighted to find somewhere as unique as The Dairy. It was a Thursday night in October 2011 and we were looking for a good bar and a good boogie and this is exactly what we found here. We had the place to ourselves which was a bonus for us, and I have to say the D.J was fantastic! A fantastic mix of rock and 80's classics with newer Dance anthems. A good time was had by all!

It's not cheap but I think this bar is better than average in Plymouth. Unlike many alternatives it's not part of a chain (as far as I'm aware) and they have made an effort on the dairy theme, with novel toilets and cocktails in milk bottles. It's main problem is it's distance from the other bars/clubs in Plymouth - sort of between Oceana, North Hill and Union Street. Nonetheless I think it's a decent bar.

On a junction by mini roundabout this is a shop unit converted into a bar disco. Nothing out of the ordinary and no reason to use unless on the night you are there you are in or expect a group of people you know or bet on with. Convenient to the adjacent bus/coach station and four five indifferent curry sheds.
