Sat on Plymouth Hoe, majestically facing the sea, this is an amazing memorial to all those who foight in the wars. Set amongst lush grass and in spring it is approached via a carpet of daffodils, this was where I chosse to stand with my husband for our wedding photos, given that we ewere both ex Navy - this is a beautiful memorial and comes into its own on Remembrance Day in November when it is lit up with poppies.

The Naval war memorial is not just a majestic sight, there are majestic sights from where it stands. This is a fine piece of architecture with sensitive features in remembrance of the fallen. Look up and notice the fine carving and take a moment to reflect and remember all who have lost their lives for freedom and peace. This memorial is at the heart of our Naval city, from here you can see Plymouth and surroundings and feel the connection with the sea.

The sheer number of names on this memorial is stunning and reminds you of the cost of war. It's also fascinating to see the places around the world that the people came from.

After my trip to the distillery, I took a stroll along the impressive Hoe. This contains several monuments and memorials, not least of all the impressive Naval War Memorial.

The Memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and was unveiled by Prince George on 29th July 1924 to commemorate the 7,000 fallen sailors of the First World War. After the Second World War, the memorial was extended to make room for the 16,000 maritime servicemen who gave their lives in that war. Similar Memorials are to be found in Portsmouth and Chatham but they do not occupy such a fitting spot as this one, looking out as it does across Plymouth Sound.

It makes for sad reading, all those names and in some ways, serves to exemplify the futility of wars as does any war memorial but it also serves to remind us of how important Plymouth always has been in the maritime defence of our country and rightly honours those who fell as a result of that defence.
