Came in here today because it looked clean tidy, almost welcoming with a big chalk board outside advertising tea and coffee with flapjacks, muffins, pasties and sandwiches all at competitive prices. Only to be told by a man near the counter that the food finished ten minutes before at five pm. There was no one else in the place. The advertising boards were still prominent on the corner of the pavement outside and did not mention any cut off time. Seemed odd that tea should finish slap bang in the middle of tea time on a warm July late afternoon. No apology or explanation. Complete indifference. No wonder perhaps that the place was empty. I give it a score of two only because it was clean and potentially a good environment in which to have snacked for a while had they been selling.

Visited here for the first time recently on a Friday night - there was a live band playing until late into the evening and the place was busy. The band weren't super but I'd happily return. drinks weren't a bargain, but not too expensive either. I didn't see any references to food anywhere.

Have happy memories of this city centre pub spread over a couple of decades in various incarnations and with changing names. I think Swan, Pen and Parchment,Big Wigs, now back to Swan. Went through busy phases, lunch times with food, evening parties etc. From time to time very enjoyable and fun with good knockabout pub food. Then I think about 18m ago everything seemed to stall, maybe a change of ownership and it hasn't quite picked up ever since. When we last came in, approximate May, we were the only people in apart from the bar staff. There was little indication of food except perhaps some pasties and pies. There were few tables. The main part was given over to a pool table. A good deal of effort had been put into redecorating but it didnt seem to be pulling drinkers or eaters in. We have recently heard that some TV sport has brought in a gentle flow of customers although no one is yet recommending it for food again. Some bench tables available across the cobbled lane in Sir John Hawkins Square for eating and drinking. The adjacent Merchants. House makes the setting of this pub comparatively interesting.
