Nice little traditional (but modernised/refurbished) pub just off the beaten track but still very close to the Barbican, Plymouth. Popped in for a drink and to use the wifi while on short visit to the city. Had everything needed and the guy serving on the Thursday afternoon was very pleasant and extremely helpful. Would certainly visit ‘The Swan’ again.

Most Plymouth people may not know its here. Unless you use the rat run to avoid the traffic lights you may never have come past. It's an unusual spot. Right beside the apparently Elizabethan Merchant's House, looking across at the kicking out door of the Magistrates' Court cells and back across the little and oddly configured Sir John Hawkin's Square.

The pub is low key unless there is a good game on the TV or some group event. I have been to a couple of very successful birthday events and also called in when its been surrounded by mellow boozy groups spilling across the road to the benches. No hard sell here, just an easy going place.

Has had several different names and fortunes down the years but this late Victorian back street corner pub is undergoing a slow but steady revival. It appears under Tripadvisor restaurants for plymouth but barely does food. It's a pub with sport on TV and a reasonable selection of beer etc so more appropriate in the nightlife section. It's not on the Barbican main drags but close enough to them to be a useful stop off. Seems to have occasional karaoke and some benches outside for balmier nights. Unpretentious but with a bit of life.

Thanks for the review, the Pub's first recorded landlord was in 1823 so it is Georgian rather than Victorian, the Karaoke is not occasional but every Saturday night.
Cheers

Very busy and relaxed atmosphere, and pleasant, smiling staff, drinks are cheaper than most places, would definitely go back.

Came in here today because it looked clean tidy, almost welcoming with a big chalk board outside advertising tea and coffee with flapjacks, muffins, pasties and sandwiches all at competitive prices. Only to be told by a man near the counter that the food finished ten minutes before at five pm. There was no one else in the place. The advertising boards were still prominent on the corner of the pavement outside and did not mention any cut off time. Seemed odd that tea should finish slap bang in the middle of tea time on a warm July late afternoon. No apology or explanation. Complete indifference. No wonder perhaps that the place was empty. I give it a score of two only because it was clean and potentially a good environment in which to have snacked for a while had they been selling.
