We came by last night thinking we might have a final drink before getting a bus or taxi. Lot of noise from the Monkey. Three police cars on the bus lane, a chubby bouncer with a large dressing on a split eyebrow and officers taking statements. A polite queue of lads, possibly servicemen were waiting to get in. The scene seemed to be regarded by all as routine and unremarkable.

In the shopping area by the bus stops. Almost always very busy, range of popular beers lagers ciders etc and a cheap food menu that's a bit like Wetherspoons. Perhaps a little down market but has a good enough bustling feel. Voices can often drown out the background music. TVs always on, usually sport.

Not bad for watching footy on the TV but this place has limited character and is usually full of a loud crowd. Cheapish booze and lots of tables. I might drop in but if I could plan ahead I would probably wonder down to Kitty's or somewhere on the Barbican where there are better more friendly pubs with screens.

Moderate prices, usually a spare table, TVs always on. Bit of noise buzz, lot of coming and going and always a throng of anxious smokers outside the door. Down market, functional but perfectly adequate bar in centre of town.

Nothing wrong with a pub full of late teen and twenties lads and their maids having a good time. This place pulls lots of them in and they all seem to be enjoying themselves. It's an old department store site and there are still really big windows in the front by the bus stops. Big screens, lot of pressure on the bar staff when I've been in. Not somewhere I would seek out unless I was close and parched. But it holds it's share of local pub business so the formula must appeal to lots of folk.
