“A Xmas Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2012

My wife and I have just had a Xmas break on a coach holiday at the Kistor, these are obviously at budget style hotels. The Kistor we found was one of the better ones. The staff were polite and helpful. The food was good and plentiful. Our room though smaller than what we are used to at home was ample, clean with ample storage for the short break. Towels were changed on request (in the bath) and there was plenty of hot water and a reasonable shower pressure. We also enjoyed a swim in the indoor pool which was kept a nice comfortable temperature, and extra towels were provided for this, and left in a basket in the changing area which was emptied promptly. An added bonus was the hotel manager, who I suspect is probably some sort of relative to Jethro the comedian, as his appearance was always entertaining. It was a pleasant and enjoyable break.
Although it was not of importance at this time of the year to us, the hotel occupies a good position and is convenient for the beach and town. I would have no fear of returning at any time of the year.

I am delighted that you enyoyed christmas with us. The staff and I certainly did. You are quite right about our location we are really close to the sea front, Torre Abbey gardens, Bowling greens, tennis courts, pitch'n'putt, the balloon etc etc. all in all the best location in Torquay as we are close to all these amenities but only a short walk to the theatre or the harbour and town.
perhaps a visit to see us during the summer months would be a thought?

Room 60 rain coming in through bedroom ceiling and through fanlight in bathroom. Damp patches on ceiling indicated rain has been penetrating ceiling for some time. Wall paper hanging off wall. Also, there appeared to be a bug in the hotel, quite a number of people
in the hotel were ill.

I am truly sorry that you have stayed with us and left with such a poor impression.
Your room has undergone a number of attempts to resolve the issue of a leaking roof. It was thought that the last attempt was successful. We have had several days when it has rained and water did not come in to the room. However, the torrential down pours we endured last week obviously proved too much for the repairs undertaken. Please contact me at the hotel so that we can discuss the matter further.
As to the the 'bug'. These viruses come to us with the passengers, or from any one visiting the hotel. It is a problem with all places where the public congregate. We take as many cautionary measures as we can by using sanitising cleaners, anti bacterial air freshners etc. as do most responsible establishments and institutions. Once it becomes known to us that a problem exists we try to ensure that a virus is contained in the guests room and are happy to bring what ever that guest requires to their room in order that other guests don't come in contact with it unnecessarily.
Apart from a mandatory passing a medical before guests enter the building there is precious little more that we can do by way of preventative procedures other than diligent cleaning and hygienic practice by all our staff.
These 'bugs' cause distress to businesses and institutions throughout the country and each time they manifest themselves they appear to be even more virulent and difficult to irradicate.
we have been free of any such 'bug' for over 5 days now but will continue to be vigilant and guests can be assured that we will do every thing that is possible to ensure their well being whilst in our hotels.

More than a year ago we met Peter the Manager outside the Hotel who invited us to come and join in on Bingo, so this time we decided to book into the Hotel and to see what it is all about. We were put into a room with a seaview which we did not even asked for and that was really a surprise as you should always have to asked for a seaview. Room was old but very clean. There was three coaches of people booked into the Hotel and service in the evening with dinner was very good. Our waiter we had Theo was excellent and the service we got from them was outstanding. Food was enough and tasteful. Entertainment after dinner was well organised and Bingo was the best. Had so much fun with Peter the Manager calling out numbers and keeping all the old folks laughing with all his sayings. Old Years evening was outstanding with everyone joining in the fun. We even won the dancing competion which made us feel part of the group. We were handed a certificate and a bottle of Bubbly which I think was very nice of the Hotel to organise things like that. The people were very friendly and when we left we are felt like family. Will definately go back in future.
Would like to thank Peter and his staff for a fun and relaxed week.

we arrived to what should have been the highlight of our year, an annual reunion that has taken place with our good friends and family from Sussex & Wales. We have been to many places and many hotels over the years and this one certainly stood out, for all the wrong reasons. We were greeted by a miserable recepionist who obviously needs some training in customer care. All of the staff with exception of 1 waiter were awful. The bar staff declined to make us a cup of tea as he was making someone else a toasted sandwich ! The dining room staff seemed to have been pulled off the street. They couldn't carry more than two plates, they managed to flick cream all down my shirt, with no apology, cleared my toast plate way while I was still eating my toast and removed my t-spoon from my saucer whilst i was still drinking my tea. They were obviously keen to get home as they cleared the evening meal plates before the whole table had finishesd. Maybe they were trying to catch up with the chef, who half way through the evening meal, we were told he had already left and couldn'd make us any custard. Come to think of it i don't think he could cook anything as every meal was cold. The potatoes were like rocks and the choice of food was very limited and seemned to be stuck in the 70's. Even the coffee was cold!
The hotel itself didn't fare much better, the decor was very dated and the swimming pool seemed to have more private swimming lessons going on it than residents, although i'm not sure why as when you got out it was like an ice house. However, we tried to warm up in our bathroom. No joy there either, the baths were filthy, the tiles covered in mould and you only seemed to be able to have hot water at 2 o,clock in the afternoon. My fathers TVR from the radiator fell off in his hand and my daughter had no handles on her windows so she couldn't shut them. We did report this and the barman came to the room and fixed it by hanging out the window and banging it into the ill fitting frame so hard that in a fire it would of been impossible to get out. We decided not to ask him to fix ours and therefore laid awake all night listening he the roaring traffic noise from outside. "Beware" if your mobilty is limited as the lift was broken more than it was working, although there was a great fire bell that seemed to be set off by the lift !!!
On a psoitive note we had a very nice, courteous waiter on two occasions who was polite and obviously has experience of waiter work. Don't know his name but he was foriegn, I think maybe it would be a good idea if he gave some in house training.

Would we visit again. DEFINATELY NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if this review is to be believed then that makes the majority of other recent reviewers liars. every one from reception, bar, restaurant etc regularly get praise for their cheery helpful disposition.
The food is always served hot and efficiently. In most cases it iis appreciated as previous reviews will affirm.
I think that there is a malicious element at work in this review and I am not prepared to defend our position as I think I prefer to treat it with the contempt it deserves.
I will however say, yes we are waiting for a new door, complete with new contacts for our lift to be manufactured.we have been at pains to explain the situation and management / staff have been running upstairs to enble guests to use the lift with little disruption or inconvenience.
i was at reception from 8am to 12 noon on the Saturday during this weekend in question and none of the points raised were brought my attention. That say's it all!

We were also on the holiday mentioned. Again the rooms were clean and we had the fortune to have a family room supplied for the 2 of us which overlooked the bay. Comfy double bed, was tempted to try the 2 single beds as well but unfair on staff. Staff really helpful and the waiters who served us treated us with respect and FUN. Lovely to hear about their young families. Peter the General Manager was out of this world, so funny and made everything fun, though during Bingo calling we all wondered what comment was coming next. Would recommend this for a fun holiday, though we were lucky to be in a group. Looking forward to our return trip in 2013. The food was brilliant and again the shepherds pie and home made rice pudding were to die for....

Room Tip: The family room had plenty of room and storage. Would like it again!!

Following the review by Wendy D we were also on the holiday she was on and can only agree with her. We had a problem with a light not working but this was rectified within 5 hours of being reported. Food was excellent and the cream tea and toasted sandwich we had at lunchtime was very good value. Staff were verry good and attentive and ably led by Peter the General manager (he was a scream). Looking forward to a return trip.
