We visited this hotel with my mum and dad in May and plan to return on the 17/10/2011
I cannot believe that people have called the managers grumpy etc as they could not have done more for us on our visit.Do people realise paying for a holiday does not mean they are buying a bit of the individuals that run the place.Good clean hotel, nice food and a great location
I thought the 2 couples on reception were professional and competent. My husband and I have been all over the world but were happy with our stay in this hotel in fact we felt the people really went the extra mile.Well done and see you soon.

Room Tip: worth paying for front facing

Good location, in a quiet road about a five minute walk to the seafront. Lovely big room with sea view, flat screen digital TV and comfortable beds and nice bathroom. Hotel has indoor and outdoor pools, with sauna, gym and evening entertainment. Food was good and plentiful. Staff were lovely. I am sure we will be returning.

Our room was clean and tidy, the hotel itself really needs refurbishing, the conservatory seating was a bit shabby and didn't smell clean, and the roof leaked.-but as a base is fine. The food and restaurant staff were beyond reproach, excellent. Some of the management could do with a refresher course on 'guest interaction'...may try again in couple years.

Just had a weeks holiday with Robinsons Holidays, Gt Harwood at this their own hotel. We had a super room by the side of the outdoor pool, which was fine. Cleaned every day. The food was FABULOUS with four choices for every course of every meal. Breakfast was 8.30am and Dinner 6.30pm with no flexibility but this meant the food was served hot and freshly cooked. The whole of the hotel was clean and Heidi and Barry and their staff very friendly and helpful. Although it was only a few minutes walk to the sea front and then a walk along the front to the town centre it was so much easier to catch the bus on the next street (Every 10 minutes) the three/four stops in to town. We did not use the hotels bar as it served Keg beer at £2.90p a pint whilst directly across the road was a SUPER little RAFA club that made guests VERY welcome (donation tin) and served really good Cask Beer at £2.34p a pint with good wine similarly cheap. Our 2/3 trips out with Allan our very humorous driver were smashing and were helped with seven days of very warm sunshine. My only two very small criticisms of the hotel were(1) with the dining room knives, Please, please buy a knife sharpener and use it. ! We all struggled to even cut the breakfast toast. And (2) a very common fault with hotels, is the toilet paper! Please, please stop providing cheap, narrow rolls and splash out on some decent quality paper.

This was our 3rd british holiday with my father who is 87 years young this year and we go on coach holidays mainly for his benefit as we prefer at our younger age to travel further afield abroad on package holidays fly/cruise or fly/stay as we enjoy warmer weather than my father does. On a previous Robinson UK coach holiday and on a previous Highland heritage coach holiday although we enjoyed the places we visited the other travellers were much older and less lively (to say the least) than on this Torquay holiday and the hotels were a little in need of repair, however, The Abbey Lawn by comparison was very good indeed. On arrival at the Abbey Lawn the proprietors were there to welcome us to the hotel and were very helpful throughout our 8 day stay, although not directly on a beach or seafront the hotel 's situation was close to the front via either of two convenient small back passageways along side the tennis courts accessed from the hotel's terrace and steps down (anyone with walking difficulties would have to use the longer road route from the front of the hotel. Depending on which passageway you took left or right of the tennis courts this would lead you to the Abbey Park toward the beautiful village of Cockington taking the right track or to the sea front (left passageway) for a pleasant leisurely stroll along the front to Torquay harbour about half a mile away. Back to the hotel, every evening after the evening meal and coffee afterwards in the entertainment lounge there was regular and varied entertainment after the usual bingo session (Wow - I won £50).
On going out each day keys were left at reception and on returning someone was always there to return them. The Abbey Lawn has a leisure complex which is also used as a leisure club for local club members which made it interesting when in the sauna talking to these members about the area. The leisure club has a gym/fitness room, indoor pool and outdoor pool. The weather in Torquay is much better than elsewhere in the country (though I'm told Bognor Regis has the best weather) and we enjoyed several days of mainly sunshine during our stay and on the last day we sunbathed outside by the pool and enjoyed a swim a swim in the outdoor pool (not heated so quite brisk at first until you got used to it) when I got out a seagull landed in the pool and entertained us whilst bathing itself for a while. The food at the Abbey Lawn was the best we have ever had at any of the coaching holiday hotels we have stayed at in the UK and the service was also the best. Our table consisted of three other people besides myself, my wife and my father and they were great company so thanks to Joyce, Edith and Audrey. Our rooms were clean though as with all UK coach holiday hotels the furnishings and bathrooms , etc; were of the older and mostly worn looking type not like the 5 star we are used to on our holidays abroad and something that the UK really does need to address. That said we were comfortable and I repeat that the room was clean and tidy. This time we did not pay extra for a better view so only got the roof and mundane car park view but as the hotel is not on the front we were not missing out on anything spectacular. Overall then I would recommend The Abbey Lawn to any older people who enjoy coaching holidays which to be faitr are really good value for money especially when you are on a pension, the proprietors who ran the reception and the bingo, etc; were excellent and should definitely be praised for their efforts in making our holiday a success. We enjoyed Torquay and it's surrounding towns and coastline - walking to Babbacombe along the coastal path 'Daddy Hole Way' one day was an excellent trek with brilliant views and also very good exercise. The Robinson's excursions were plently and were also excellent, especially when you consider that they were all incuded in the holiday price and you didn't have to go on any of them if you didn't want to and the coaches are the most comfortable we've travelled on with reclining seats, belts and foot rests plus an onboard WC and tea making facilities (that were never offered or used by the way something that might want to be addressed by Robinsons?)

I have just returned from this hotel and was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the staff, after reading previous articles on Abbey Lawn I was a bit apprehensive but I found no problem at all. Heidi and her husband were helpful, giving directions to bus stops and bus times, advising on good locations to visit etc. The food was good and plentiful and our waitress was extremely pleasant, smiling all the time, even when working under pressure. Meals were served efficiently, there was a good choice each evening, I had salad most days and the accompaning meat, fish or cheese was always plentiful. As an old hotel it could do with a refurbishment but it was spottlesly clean.
Just one warning 'watch out for the lift gate' it shoots back at great speed, watch your fingers! Don,ty take notice of the moaners, it's not the Ritz but you aren't paying /ritz prices. thank you for a good holiday Abbey Lawn and Robinson's staff. Linz - Bradford

just enjoyed a 8 day Robinsons coach holiday at abbey lawn with my mother. Very helpful amusing coach driver Allan took us on some wonderful trips, also can recommend the round robin trip. The hotel was very clean, very inviting, our room was lovely and kept very clean, water lovely and hot, food was wonderful, very varied selection, Tim was our waiter and he could not do enough for us, John also served us some days, lovely young man he is too. The management were very friendly, entertaining and helpful, Heidi is lovely, very chatty, funny and helpful, i will miss her. Barry has a great dry sense of humour, very friendly, they both work hard. Scott the barman is lovely, very friendly, chatty and helpful. the assistant managers are great too Kate and Randal. the indoor pool is lovely clean and warm, a bit shallow but can still enjoy a good swim, the gym is modern and offers plenty and always supervised. the outdoor pool (yes i was brave enough to go in) is very cold but ok once you get in, really enjoyed it, garden/patio areas are kept nice. night entertainment is ok, Hiliary who is on one night is very good. yes the lift is very old but it works and i think brings character to the hotel. there is a lovely path at the back of the hotel which takes you to the beach, quite flat too. would recommend the hotel and robinsons coach trips at abbey lawn without hesitation and i hope to return myself in the near future. thanks heidi and barry

Room Tip: my room was on the 3rd floor overlooking the tennis club with a sea view
