I have had real difficulty in writing this review as everything that I wanted to say has already been said by other recent reviewers, most of whom must have spent the same week-end as my wife & I. Like other reviewers, I had booked with the Abbey Lawn on a KGB deal. £99 for two nights with breakfast & evening meal included - how could this not be a good deal ?
We were greeted with a nice surprise upon arrival. When booking (central booking), I was told that only Twin Rooms were available on the week-end I wanted. I begrudgingly accepted this although Shanice did say that she would try to find me a Double, possibly by way of a cancellation, before my arrival. Good to her word, we were allocated a very nice Double Room (115) with Four Poster Bed and distant sea view. Apart from the very squeaky floor, no complaints whatsoever. Hotel staff were very pleasant and the hotel was scrupulously clean.
What was most unusual was that no card details were taken on arrival for purchases during your stay. We soon found out that this was because everything was required to be a cash transaction. Again-unusual, but no great problem. As stated in other reviews, what let the Abbey Lawn down was its restuarant. Fixed meal times for all at 8.30am for Breakfast & 6.30 for Dinner, did make the atmosphere a little Retirement Home. Food Quality could best be described as 1960s School Dinners, filling but not very appetising in either presentation or content. The restuarant staff were however very attentive, managing to get guests through three courses in just over thirty minutes.
In conclusion, a very good deal, accomodation good, hotel position good, staff good, food not so good.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a superior room with seaview.

stayed on a kgb deal 3 days ago. so basic, food the worst i have ever had in any hotel in torquay. waiter was rude and miserable. room basic clean, but not somewhere i would like to wake upto. the bar closed at 11.15, people were arriving back from an evening out and wanted a nightcap, no chance shutter was pulled down and that was that. could not believe that breakfast was one glass of cheap orange juice but then not allowed cereal, pathetic, what would that have cost! we ate out for rest of our stay as could not bear the restaurant experience again. you could not pay me to stay here again!!!!

This is advertised as Huddersfield to Torquay direct which it was but via so many city centres. we left Huddersfield at 7.50 then to Brighouse- then Halifax town centre then to Leeds city centre at peak traffic time - then the motorway to Sheffield centre -then to Nottingham city centre bus station a nightmare to find . we had travelled 70 miles direct from Huddersfield to Nottingham by noon!!!! then to Torquay after 2 stops where we arrived at rush hour at 6. 30. p.m. The hotel was very clean the staff very helpful but the evening meals deteriorated till by Thursday the evening meal was very poor do not order the meat and potato pie it is not good as another 3 guests said we did not pay a lot £139 for Monday to Friday and it shows . It would have been sense to serve an excellent meal on Thursday evening to leave a good impression. The return journey was cases out for 7a.m depart at 9a.m and -we felt sorry for the excellent coach driver - who did his very best. We left the coach at 5.20p.m. in Sheffield returning home by train and were in Huddersfield at 7p.m. ROBINSONS COULD HAVE PLANNED THIS SO MUCH BETTER TAXI FROM CITY CENTRES TO MOTORWAY STATIONS,OR BETTER STILL SUNDAY TO THURSDAY HOLIDAYS TO AVOID SOME RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. I ASSUME THE PLANNER OF THE TOURS HAS NEVER BEEN ON THESE JOURNEYS AND THAT THEYARE PLANNED FOR MAXIMUM PROFIT BUT SURELY A FEW TAXI FARES WOULD BE BETTER THAN VERY VERY UNHAPPY CLIENTS FOR THESE HOLIDAYS ARE BY PLANNING FOR THE ELDERLY .TAKE CARE WHEN PLANNING THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ENDURE THE JOURNEY WE HAD TO. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL RETURN OUR TRAIN FARE!!

Stayed here on a weekend kgb deal for £99 but I would of rather stayed at home if I knew it was going to be this bad. The hotel is really dated and our bath and shower was dirty. We were put in a side room for meals, not in the main dinning area. The room was very crowded and the waiters was not friendly at all. Everyone was sat in silence as the tables were so close together. Tables were not even arms length apart from 1 another. The food was overs cooked and tasteless. We didnt finish any of our meals and ended up up Mc Donalds 1 night and Pizza Hut the other. Upon arrival and when we came in and out of hotel, the receptionists wouldnt even smile, they were always miserable!! Site seeing around Torquay was lovely but this hotel was such a let down!! Our room was nothing like the photos on here!! Very very disappointed. Will never return to this hotel. Needs new management and a complete revamp!!

Very rude manager, commented to us on arrival that we had only paid £99 for our KGB deal and should not complain...... we was not complaining.. only asking at the desk if the room had a walk in shower that we had requested via their central reservations! he said all rooms have bath and shower over, ok if your agile enough to climb in!!!
breakfast is served for ALL guests at 8.30am we were told to make sure we were in dining room by 8,45am or we would not get served. we arrived at 8.30am and did not get our breakfast till 9.15am would make more sense to stagger meal times as friendly overstretched waiters cant cope with the volume of people. same goes for evening 6.30pm in for dinner.
We notice the entertainment board on way to room, but later in day the entertainment for weekend was removed, can only guess they didn't want to pay out to entertain guests on a kgb deal.
Came back Friday evening 10.50pm for a night cap before bed to find bar shut, even though hotel details state last orders 11.30pm, porter directed us to a pub across road!
On the plus the hotel is very clean, and our bed was comfortable, we paid extra for a room on the back overlooking tennis court with sea view which was ok apart from squeaky floor.
Friends had room on front which they said was noisy.
no wifi in rooms

Room Tip: rooms on back have nice view

Like many reviewers, this was a cheap weekend break on a KGB deal. I find it a hard hotel to review because whilst nothing was particularly bad, nothing was particularly good either.
The hotel is about a twenty minute walk to the harbour area of Torquay and there is ample parking in the car park or surrounding roads.
Parts of the hotel seemed a bit 'tired', including our room with ill fitting drawers and sand-paper rough towels, some of which had holes in them. It was, however, a nice sized room, with great views over the bay.
We both thought the dinner was pretty poor overall. There is one sitting and you are allocated a table for the duration of your stay. The food delivery is very quick - mainly because it has no doubt been sitting there ready to be heated up and served. I doubt there are many places where you can sit down for dinner at 6.30 and be back in your room at 7.20 having consumed three courses! The vegetables deserve a particular mention in the poor food stakes!
Also be sure to take your wallet with you as any drinks you order with your meal have to be paid for immediately they are brought to your table, in cash!
Breakfast was okay but nothing special.
But, as the title of the review says, you get what you pay for. It was a cheap deal and in that regard was decent value for money. We enjoyed our break in Torquay and I'm sure future guests will as well.
