“Definitely a 2* hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2012

I am always wary about criticising a 2* hotel as it is what it says on the tin! I believe that the 'official' description of this rating may be 'typically small independently owned properties which offer a satisfactory level of quality and convenience. Services may be limited but the accommodation should be well maintained" (www.stayinukhotels.com). I did know roughly what to expect at the Cavendish however they could so easily improve many things. I can only speak for my room as I did not see any others. It's not good enough for management to say if you are not happy with your room come and speak to us - everyone should be shown to a room which is 'well maintained'. This hotel actually has potential but people expect a certain standard of cleanliness regardless of what they pay. I would imagine that a lot of the repeat business is from bus tours and some of the people from one bus said that they had been before and standards had gone down since the last time. Didn't go to the pool so can't comment on that. If you want your tv to work you have to ask for a remote control as it is not offered to you on arrival.

Positive things about this hotel
1) The staff at reception are very helpful
2) The reception area and reception toilets are good
3) There is entertainment
4) The shower in the en suite was good
5) Sheets and towels were clean

Negative things about this hotel
1) You can't get in the front door and have to walk from the bus round to the car park and in the back door. That is difficult for old people getting off the land train or bus on main street. That door looks extremely scruffy and could easily be sorted.
2) The waiters/waitress are touchy feely and loud, which perhaps some people like. They also call you my love, sweetheart and other inappropriate endearments. Again maybe some people are happy with that.
3)Food was just acceptable. Plenty of it but anything fried tasted as if fat was old.
4)Bedroom needed a good deep clean and paint job. The en suite (see photos) had a drinking glass on the toilet cistern because the cup holder was too small. That was disgusting and needless to say never used. Radiator was covered in rust spots and there was a suspect brown mark under the toilet paper holder (which incidentally was difficult to get paper out of!)
5) Clean sheets for the room were left outside on the floor, waiting for the occupant to leave. The floor?
6)Couldn't get radiator to work and it was cold in room in the evening
7) I believe that room 7's toilet roll holder was about 5 feet away from the toilet. The light switch for that room was by the bath and not near the door, making it difficult to find in the dark.

Fortunately I didn't have to spend much time in either the room or the restaurant as I was too busy enjoying Torquay, which is a nice town. I'm sure there are nicer places to stay for the same price. It is up a steep hill so possible not suitable for people with mobility problems although there is a land train stops across the road. All in all a very average hotel.

Room Tip: Do not unpack if you are not happy with the room

We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. We are continually carrying out repairs, maintenance and upgrading but with 96 rooms to look after and the current economic climate
it is getting very difficult to keep up, but we are doing our best. Cleanliness is another matter and Housekeeping has been informed. The main entrance to the hotel is the entrance by the main car park. This entrance is much easier for guests, close to Reception and has a ramp for disabled. The other entrance door is kept locked for security and it has many steps down to the footpath. Coaches, taxis etc. usually drop off and pick up at the car park entrance.

Went for a long weekend break to this hotel and had a fabulous time, two couples travelling together.
The rooms allocated were good with lovely sea views of the bay - we were only bed and breakfast, so cannot comment on the evening meal but the breakfast, was good if basic.
However it was full waiter service so once you were seated everything was brought to you and with more than enough staff to cover a full restaurant which makes a nice change.
The hotel itself could be seen to be tired and yes the floorboards creaked a little, and at night you could hear the comings and goings of other guests to their rooms, redecorating was needed in places but this for me just added to the charm of the place nothing was too much trouble for the staff and everyone was very friendly and welcoming I think in these days of soul less chain hotel rooms this hotel shows that family run hotels are still out there and when run well, as this one is, they are really worth finding and using.
The location was perfect for us with it being a short walk to the seafront and equally short walk to the town centre.
As I am previously from Torquay I am very aware of the hotels in the area and have stayed at many but I shall definitely be rebooking with the Cavendish, as for me it has the right balance of prime location, good service, friendly surroundings and good value for money

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

We visit the Cavendish at least once a year as a family. Our latest holiday at the end of May was the same excellent experience we've always had. The prices are extremely reasonable, in fact we wonder how they provide the service, the entertainment and the exceptional food for the price. Our rooms were fine, clean with tea and coffee and hairdryers and attended daily. The food far exceeds other Torquay hotels we've used when the Cavendish has been too ful to accomodate us. If the dates we want aren't available we now change the dates rather than stay anywhere else. This is a family run friendly hotel. Top marks must go the the many staff, each and every one providing the best of customer service. This year my father fell in the dining room, the staff could not have done more to help. On a previous visit my husband was hospitalised (There is an age where trampolines are not such a good idea...) the staff kept a late meal for me, a parking space and extended my stay without question. We enjoy the facilities, good old fashioned (free!) family fun of table tennis and the pool which was warm and welcoming. The bar has been refurbished and a special mention to Mike who looked after us as usual, remembered our round of drinks from previous years and had our drinks waiting for us on arrival! The drink prices are remarkably low for a hotel and the entertainment is a pleasure. We cannot fault the Cavendish for yet another excellent holiday and hope to return later this year and many more times. Thanks again Cavendish.

I recently stayed at the hotel, which on arrival looked very nice, and located in a great position in Torquay, only 10 mins from main road into the town. The room was very spacious and had a double with a single be over looking the main road, although tidy and comfortable with room could have done with a lick of paint. The room had a sink in the bedroom, and a separate bath and toilet which had one of those saniflow sytems which sounded like it was going to take off when flushed. Had the evening meal there which was 3 courses, and had plenty of choice, although the napkins on the table were slightly damp. Soup was very nice, but main meal not very hot. Breakfast was nice, but not a lot if a hungry person. Facilities at the hotel were good, and the outside pool which my son used was extremely warm. Entertainment wise, didnt see any, when we looked in the bar, nothing much seemed to be happening. However, bar prices for drinks very cheap. Parking at hotel a bit of a nitemare, cars had to be blocked in as not enough spaces. Had a lovely curry up the hill at Bombay Express.Overall experience at hotel good, but did think it was over priced for 2 days, other people that I spoke too, seemed to have better deals for staying a whole week. Would I go back to hotel prob not, but I would go back to Torquay.

Stayed there over the jubilee weekend , the rooms are old fashioned , damp patches all over the ceilings , carpet badly fitted all over . The hotel smells musty. The only thing that was good was the pool outside the indoor one loOks like it hasn't been cleaned in months sauna also out of order. Food was vile breakfast was like fried bread dipped in a chip pan which also hadn't been cleaned for months . Car parking is a joke blocked in 2 nights. I know this is only a 2 star but the money we paid we could of stayed in a 4 star. Dont waste your time staying here it's a mess.( faulty towers)

Just spent 3 days at the Cavendish over the Jubilee Weekend, room was clean and comfortable but a bit dated. Nice breakfast and a good choice on the evening menu. All the staff very polite and helpful. Hope to return later this year.
