I had read reviews that this was, in a sense, a "shabby" hotel. I really didn't know what to expect particualrly as it had a 2 star rating and I would usually go for a 3 or 4 star.Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. On arrival, I found the staff very friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. My room was comfortable, adequate and very clean. What more did I want.? Some reviewers have said that this hotel was "tired" and outdated in its decor. That is perhaps true to a certain extent, but to me, the cleanliness, comfortable bed and atmosphere were excellent and that is all I wanted.
This is a large hotel and has an attractive garden to relax in and plenty of activity for the kids. The hotel is very spacious with plenty of lounge areas. I was very happy here and will be returning in Ocober for another break.Well done, Cavendish!

Room Tip: Avoid 207--it's next to the lift.

we stayed at the Cavendish from 03/09/12 - 07/09/12.
On arrival the staff were very friendly showing us to our room. First impression of the hotel was it could do with a lick of paint and re - wallpapered in all area's and the floors were creeky.
Our room was ok just old. I lay on the bed watching the tv and after 10 mins I started to itch my hands then my arms and legs, I had many bites. I stood up opened the bed and the bottom sheet had flees. I could see them jumping. We complained and was given keys to another room. When we went into the other room it had not been cleaned from the previous people. The bed was unchanged and not made, the tea and coffee cups still had left overs in, the sink and toilet dirty. We went back to complain and was given yet another room. This room had the draw curtains hanging of and the bed was well worn. The room was above the bar and dance floor and the noise was unbearable.
We stayed int the room the first night then the next morning the manager gave us a large family room which was ok. The cold water tap was luke warm and never got cold.
We went to breakfast and was told the table we were given was our table everyday and just go to this table every morning. On the second morning someone else was sitting at our table. The waitress said sorry and they had us down for 1 night stay not 4. We were then given a different table which we used ok for the other 3 mornings. We were given a free drink from the bar to say sorry. We will never stay there again and advise people not to stay. There are much better hotels in Torquay than this.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

We were obviously very shocked when you mentioned fleas in your room. Immediately we closed the room down and contacted our Pest Control Company. They inspected the room but could not find any evidence of fleas. However, we did ask them to treat the room just in case. As regards the rest of your stay, we feel, that on this occasion we obviously would not have been able to satisfy you and can only apologise once again as we did at the time..

Not the Ritz, but certainly not the Pitz. U r made so welcome he,re. Staff can't do enuf 4 you. Very professionally run by family, with a personal touch. Ideally situated, close to town centre, 5 mins from promenade, indoor & outdoor pool are spotless.

Room Tip: Ground floor, sea view

Stayed at the Cavendish for 2 nights. The overall cleanliness in the public areas was very good. The bedroom we had was clean, large, with 2 armchairs and a coffee table beside the usual furniture, with tea making facilities. The added bonus was a balcony, which was large, and contained a table, 2 chairs and a sun lounger, but could have done with a general tidy up. Ie- a coat of paint to the rails, and the removal of weeds at the edge of balcony, plus a sweep up, there were cigarette stubs pushed in a corner, probably from previous guest. The reception staff and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was cleaned and the towels and coffee, tea and milk replaced daily. Breakfast was adequate and evening meal was well presented with a good choice of menu. The only quibble with the evening meal is that no coffee or tea was served after. These had to be ordered at the bar, and paid for if required. The main reason for our visit was to view the downstairs function room, for which we had planned to use with a party of dancers next year. Unfortunately this did not meet our requirements. It was not large enough for our party. This room could be a good attraction for the hotel if it had a little T.L.C. The floor needed stripping and buffing, also a little attention to the paint work. It was generally tired and worn. There was however a very good sound system in place, which would be a boon for a smaller party say maybe around 50. Value for a 2 star hotel was generally good,

Room Tip: Room 12 has a balcony, and overlooks the garden. The tennis club and church were also visible. A ple...

Just returned from a weeks stay at The Cavendish, lovely friendly staff, which made up for the poor hotel, we were given a ground floor room which was actually a triple room for two of us, the room was in a very poor condition, although the beds were clean, the decor was in desperate need of a make over, huge cracks along the cornicing and down the walls which has been attempted to be fixed but were merely filled with a filler which you could clearly see, the extractor fan and main light in our bathroom didn't work and we had to use the shaver light and also the shower curtain pole fell from the wall whilst I was in the shower. The dining room and the bar area also require a make over the bar area looks more like a mens club than a hotel lounge. The food was a bit on the poor side but seemed to get better as our week went on, and also no tea or coffee after our evening meal which we have always had at any other 2 star hotel, if you wanted it you had to buy it. Would like to return to Torquay and would love to visit the Cavendish again once it has had a major make over. We did enjoy our stay and I know it is a 2 star hotel, but spending a bit of money on it could make the hotel a lovely place as it is a lovely old building. Perhaps you could do with a visit from the Hotel Inspection!!

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, we can only improve the hotel within our means and in this current economic climate, like many hotels in Torquay, there is just not enough money coming into the hotel for major refurbishment. However, the Bar Lounge was completely refurbished 18 months ago, the Ballroom has just been completely redecorated the floor is due to be stripped over the winter period. Also the Restaurant is having new flooring put down over the next 6 weeks. So we are doing our best and we note your comments. Many thanks

this was our first coach trip package ,and were a little worried after reading some of the reviews for the cavendish, whilst agreeing with some of the criticisms (decor) they certainly were not as bad as were made out ,in my opinion it was an all round enjoyable experience ,the staff were pleasant especially in the restaurant and interacted well with the guests, i have mobility problems and arranged ahead for a suitable room , although the hotel needs a face lift it made up for this with the friendliness of all the staff, if you are on a budget with reasonable expectations i would recommend this hotel !!

Dripping taps, uncomfortable beds, broken extractor fans in bathroom, leaking ceilings was given a bucket! floorboards lifted up generally needs updating and some TLC! Been going to Torquay for the last 7 years first time we have stayed in this hotel but will not stay again we went for a short 3 day break and had a different room for every night we were there! Was offered a £40 refund and a drink from the bar!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are bigger and quieter but you risk a leaking ceiling if it rains!
