The hotel really is tired to say the least, the staff try hard to please but they are flogging a dead horse! We had to change rooms because there wasn't any water in the shower for 2 days, we were upgraded! this room was bigger with a diggie box bath and overhead shower but as I sat on the bed the headboard fell on me, also the curtains were hanging by only 3 hooks. There is so many jobs needing doing, also the electric went off for 1/2 hour!

What could be worse, start with the positives.

Reception looked clean and tidy and nearly modern.

The 2 guys who worked the bar in the evening were very good one was Michael and the staff in the restraunt were all very helpful.

Room was clean (to a certain point)

Now the negatives

The young lady on reception could not raise a smile and was not helpful at all after asking simple questions about the hotel, she is a member of the family .
Room outdated like being in the 70's.
Beds like sleeping on bare springs.
Could not turn off shower when running a bath.
Floorboards moved where ever you walked.
Carpets were not clean in public areas and most had holes in.
Food portions in restraunt was poor & you had to book your evening meal at breakfast.

I could go on and on but I feel this would unfair to the hardworking staff who have to work in such outdated work conditions. Pictures shown on website do not show the real look of this hotel.

We are told this is a family run hotel but the family who are running it dont seem that bothered about how it is run, caters more for the elderly and coach trips, but I think no one would be happy about the state of this hotel.

Plus you have to pay a £5.00 deposit for everything from remote control to an Iron.

Another forty towers I am afraid.

This did not spoil our holiday one bit because we just get on with it

Sometimes reading reviews can give such a mixed reaction but I will try my best

Have stayed in quite a few hotels in the last few years in the UK and this was the worst one but also the cheapest so you really take your choice

We only paid £308 for 4 nights DBB on an offer

When booking the hotel only had standard rooms so I took one on arrival we were up graded to room 115 as per a previous message This room is nothing like the upgrades we have had at previous hotels this room was just about standard

This room although it was a fair size and had a sea view was as far as it got on being a up grade The bathroom was dark and dingy although clean the lighting was bad the bath had a shower head but you had to hold this as there was no fixtures to put it in. Two cheap soap bars were the toiletries. I cant begin the describe the four poster bed but my husband is 6' 4 and didnt fit in too well. A good supply of tea coffee ect but very bad quality T bags. No details that you usually find in a hotel room Bar times - service ect.

Later spoke to people who had standard rooms and they were not impressed

The meals are basic my first time of being told in a hotel I could have orange juice or cornflakes certainly not both. The cooked breakfast was again very basic with the cheapest of products the sausages had never seen pork Toast tough and cold

We had to then order evening meal at breakfast !! a first for us Evening meal again was fair but very plain. The waiting staff were pleasant but no head waiter or wine waiter first time have not been asked if we would like to order wine or drinks with our meal. meals were also a rushed affair but suppose they could be as we had to order at breakfast

The hotel bars were shut a lot of the time. I dont drink but my husband enjoys one before dinner he was told bars were shut 5-30 to 7-30 and to order from reception ! odd

The hotel in parts could really do with a good clean the front entry on Belgrave road is very bad and the carpet smells of dirt and spilt milk gone off

The AA star rating does not help much either we stayed in a 2 star hotel in Jersey last year and these hotels could not be further apart in standards and service

So you do really take your choice this hotel has nothing like 5* service or food It is very very basic

We wont be going back ever

This was our first trip to Torquay as well as our first stay at the Cavendish.( I was also worried about the bad reviews) but when we arrived were greeted by a lovely lady receptionist and was guided to our room 115. What a surprise. We had a double room,
with a sea view, tea and coffee facilities, en suite bathroom, a 4 poster bed also on the wall was a Flat screen television. It was immaculate with room service everyday.
The restaurant was 5 star with waiter/waitress service, all the meals were out of this world. My husband and I throughly enjoyed the week and will be going their again.
Well done to all at the Cavendish

the hotel is very much in need of a refurbishment; and isn't being used to its full potential, with public rooms left empty when these could be used for the guests who are staying at the hotel. Restaurant manager not always on hand to greet new guests, who were being left to wait before being seated - was always a case of "sorry to keep you waiting" - doesn't the restaurant manager know what time the meals are served.
