Maybe the worst hotel in torquay and probably the worst one I've stayed in the UK. Definitely not to be visited again. The twin room was absolutely tiny and we felt cramped including the shower which was so small I kept knocking the control from freezing to "scalding".Throughout our stay we kept bumping into one another and felt very claustrophobic.Getting to sleep at night was impossible even though we did not go to bed very early. The cause of the noise came from the bar directly below our room. They played music & karaoke every night except line dancing night which was held in another room, but on this night a group arrived back from the theatre at 10.30 to drink at the bar and they sang til very late!I had to purchase ear plugs so that I'd be somewhat awake the next day and could escape!
To balance things up food was edible but not to a great standard which was no surprise due to the packaged coach trip.Restaurant staff were very keen & helpful but I believe this was thought of as being above & beyond their basic duty and a reward was expected at the end of the stay.Just because it was cheaper than other hotels doesn't mean it has to be nasty as well in this day and age.

Hotel was ok, all staff friendly.
Room was in need of a makeover, both window sash cord had broken, so window kept open with a piece of MDF, carpet needed a good shampoo. Beds were comfortable with crisp clean sheets.
Restaurant was fine, food was very good & plenty of it with a good choice of starters , mains & desserts.
I went with my mum (76) we ended up at the hotel at the start of their 'Turkey & Tinsell' season.

This has to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in in my life!

Where to start? Just about anything you could think was so bad, it has to be hard to imagine a worse hotel.

Pools - Indoor pool, down a very unsafe staircase to a dark and dingy basement that contained a concrete square of very dirty water. The sauna was a box in the corner.
Outdoor pool not heated and not at all like the brochure. Dirty and very neglected. Cigarete butts everywhere and dirty crockery not cleared from the tables for 3 days!

Food - Portions very small, would not satisfy a gnat. Poor quality food, all frozen foods. Full breakfast was 1 sausage,1 rasher of bacon, 1 egg and 12 baked beans (I counted them). Waiting staff very surly and unhelpful. You had to order evening meal at breakfast because the chef cooks the evening meals straight after breakfast and they are then microwaved in the evening. That could be why the food is so tasteless. I tried to order a cheese sandwich at 2.30pm and was told this was not available as the chef had gone home. All they had was a packet of crisps or peanuts.

Reception staff - the most unpleasant , miserable staff I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Everything was a nuisance to them, apart from answering the phone, in case it was a new booking!

Rooms - Dirty, small, floorboards creaked everywhere. Dismal atmosphere pervaded the hotel. The lounge was not used at all except for the Line Dancing night for outside visitors. If you wanted to sit and relax during the day, you had to sit in the reception area, which only has about 16 chairs, otherwise people were standing around looking bored.
The lift was very dangerous there seems to be no safety mechanism in place. I was in the lift and starting to up and the door opened from below and an elderly lady tried to get in, only problem was the lift was about half a floor above her.

Entertainment - Bar not open until 7.30pm. The stage was a piece of black tatty curtain with paper stars stuck to it. Bingp at 8.45pm then entertainment at 9.30pm. Very poor quality, very amateurish. A singer who couldn't sing, a comedian who forgot his lines and was not at all funny, a duo who sang and played a small keyboard. I pity the people who came with children, they must have been so bored. This hotel is not suitable for children at all. Well not anybody really but especially not children.

Please do not waste even £1 going to this hotel. I know you get what you pay for, but in these times any amount of money spent on a holiday is a luxury and you at least want to feel that you have had a holiday that was worth the money.

I have written to the Tourist Board because I feel that this hotel is just so far below any acceptable standard that they must take action to stop people wasting their money.

Oh I feel that I must be fair so I have tried to come up with a good comment, the only one I can think of is that there is free parking.

Had a three night stay at the Cavendish. Its a bit shabby, but overlook that and you get a spotless hotel , excellent food, and pleasent staff. We found entertainment excellent ,but perhaps geared to the older generation, great comedians who managed to get laughs without a single f word.Torquay is very hilly but as the land train stops outside {£3for an all day ticket] its was no problem. If you want a base stay here, you wont get better value for money anywhere , its not a 4 star hotel, but cleanliness and friendlyness are second to none. Will definately go again

I supported someone on a weekend coach trip and ended up at the Cavendish 'hotel'. I was shocked by the accommodation, I did not know hotels like this existed. Our (single) rooms were a cross between a prison cell and a doss house (not quite as nice). The headboard and pillows were stained and absolutely filthy, furnishings broken, dirty and dated, decor was depressing, there is nothing good I can say about the accommodation. The lady I spoke to at reception clearly couldn't be bothered to respond to my (polite) complaints. It is disrespectful to expect anyone to stay in a place like this. Shut it down and blow it up.
