“Decent digs for night away”
Reviewed 4 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed at this hostal last weekend as a football tour group. Up on entering we knew we had to pay a £10 deposit to the owner/manager who was not impressed we had chosen her place to stay and said she does not take football groups which does not state that on hostel bookers. We then had to proceed and give her ID for each person and when we asked surely 1 person per room was sufficient she said that every hotel in the country requires ID from each person which is completely in correct and goes to show the last time she stayed in a hotel must have been 10+ years ago, this ID issue would be avoided if they just got a card reader to take a pre authorise to cover for any possible damage this would solve the whole ID issue. After our little Hitler speech we were then given the talk that this place is not for us and only familys stay there which is complete nonsense as all other guests were single sex party's which made a hell of a lot of noise. Its a shame as the owner kept hovering around our rooms till she was happy we would not be a problem and in the morning she was far more relaxed and easy going but in the morning I tried 3 of the 4 toilets trying to find loo roll and luckily on the last toilet there was 1 roll on there which is really bad. I would recommend this place to stay but the no card payment is a real issue and feel they need to get with the times a bit. Big car park on site and rooms were nice big and spacey with a lovely touch of glasses and bottle of squash which u don't expect from a hostel but down part was only a couple of plug sockets.....nightmare for the 5 of us trying to charge our phones. I would stay here again most definitely and hopefully without the interrogation at the start :-)

Hi Matt thank you for having taken the time to write such a comprehensive feedback Although I agree we some of your comments I just like to make a comment on a couple of them
1. during check in time I will be around and available for anything guests need to ask . I would not call this " hovering" around I like to call it courtesy towards my guests
2 Why make IDs such an issue once you start travelling abroad you will quickly learn that they are a necessity and quite rightly so why should hotel/hostel owners not know who they accommodate
3 I did have to smile - hunting for a loo roll - that really is a first glad you were successful !
All in all I am glad you liked and enjoyed our hostel and we like to welcome you again but with ID and interrogation
Best regards Marga

This uniquely fun, bright & clean hostel is everything the discerning traveller could ask for. Self service kitchen, Internet & no curfew, easy access in a well positioned, comfortable facility within an easy walk from the beach & shopping. Excellent value for money with quality European service from the owner & staff delivered with a smile. Can highly recommend whether solo, family or group. The garden cabins also looked great for an intimate retreat... hope to return to try one of those another time!

Although I stayed here in the off season with only two other residents, I had one of the best stays I've ever had in a hostel. I feel bad even calling it a hostel. A brilliant kitchen and outdoors area, great beds, showers and common areas. I had the most relaxing four nights at Le Papillon, made all the more comfortable by wonderful owner Marga. I will happily book again should I visit Torquay in the future!
