“INVEST IN YOUR HOTEL”
Reviewed 9 January 2013

We were asked by my partners family to join them at the derwent for the christmas period they have stayed at this hotel 2-3 times already. we booked a christmas package christmas eve christmas day boxing day in a double room,

ARRIVAL/FIRST IMPRESSIONS
we found the hotel very easily but the car park was harder to find after going around the side roads we finaly found it space's were limited but we got a space

after unloading our luggage we found the rear entrance has a flight of stairs and no lift not easy for getting luggage down.other wise a long walk to the front of the hotel.

check in was fast and friendly

THE ROOM

We were given a double room on the first floor
the room was small and quite dated ,there is a small tv and tea making equipment that was renewed daily
the room wasnt clean to the standards we are use to worn carpet very old style bathroom suite
staining to the ceilling (see pics)

the cleaner came every day but would only run a cloth around the bathroom and empty the bin
but she was very friendly and helpful tho

PUBLIC AREAS

as the title says investment is needed very badly in the corridors of the upstairs rooms the carpets are thread bare and held together with duct tape in other areas the carpets are ripped causing a trip hazzard,
the corridors are quite tight and could do with a lick of paint there is many fire doors and steps not easy with a push chair.

THE FOOD

as many other on here have said the food is very good very plentiful and of good quality
just a shame the service was terrible the staff in the resturant were rushed off there feet
and we sat for long periods waiting for food and drinks to be served
the staff did apologise in the resturant but the service never improved.

ENTERTAINMENT
the entertainment was good a night quite hard to get a seat as the starlight lounge did fill up fast but by 9.30 seats were available most nights
there is a huge indoor pool area thats heated and was excellent for the children with life gaurds on duty
there is also a large games area in the next door hotel with bowling childrens soft play area and many games

this hotel does need some improvment in the areas mentioned but it could be a very good hotel otherwise

Room Tip: ask for a bigger double as they do have them

We have stayed at the Derwent on several occasions and on each and every trip both catering and clerical plus cleaners have made our stay trouble free.We always look forward to our trip to Torquay and the fact that we are staying at the Derwent and can look forward to a relaxing stay.

Once again we had a surperb Xmas and new year break at TLH. It was our third Xmas we have spent there and already rebooked for 2013. So much entertainment for all ages and the food is unbeatable, there is so much choice. What a great family run hotel. See you all in 2013

I couldn't disagree more with the review that states the Starlight Room was full of badly behaved children. We spent New Year as a family at the Derwent and can honestly say it was the best New Year we have had in a very long time. The entertainment was fantastic with the entertainment team working flat out day and night to keep things moving. The actual celebration on New Year's Eve was warm and welcoming with lovely touches such as canapés, piper and champagne which we were actively reminded to get! My 14 year old companions and I didn't leave the dance floor and had a fabulous time.
We have booked again for next year and can't wait!

Definitely a Christmas to remember - well done to the Derwent and thank you..

We took my mother in law who is registered blind for Christmas and although we stayed at the Derwent the fact it is in a group of hotels where facilities can be shared was a real bonus. The staff could not do enough for us, and the food was absolutely superb and a real bonus being well upto the standard we have been used to on our Christmas cruises in other years. How they consistently maintained such a high standard with so many guests is unbelievable. It is not a new building but the rooms were very clean and contained everything we expected apart from a radio in my mother in law's room/the tv did not provide radio reception either - but we had taken our own as they are frequently not in hotel rooms these days although invaluable for blind guests (All hotel owners please note!)

Would we go again? - most definitely as it was superb value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is close to all the town's amenities during the day with even a "Dotto" road train stopping outside. We also enjoyed the evening entertainment too which was varied and professional.

Only gripes - the main lounge in the Derwent is not quite large enough to get everyone a seat in the evenings for the main shows at such a busy period, but we did not mind as we went to the Tooraq and Carlton where their lounges had excellent artistes and plenty of space to relax and enjoy the evening. Also disappointingly the pub attached to the hotels was terrible the one lunchtime we popped in - but the hotel management were very quick to put matters right and they are clearly determined to ensure their standards do not drop...

Room Tip: To avoid people waking you up passing in the corridors if you loike an earlyish night - book a room...

We have been staying here at the Derwent for many years with our two children now are teenagers. We feel the Starlight Lounge is now an extension of the Toby Club. very young children running around the dance floor uncontrolled. the entertainment team gone down in our opinion. and the so called music waa so lound it hurt your ears ans could not hold any conversation with family or friends. it was noted that there were different chairs ad tables to enable to get more families in!! I was seated in middle section in the front and could not get to the bar without going out the far door and entering by the bar. just hope there is never an emergency!! We will now be looking elsewhere for next Christmas.

Thank you for your review. Having spent my Christmas and New Year in and around the entertainment venues I can honestly say that the children that accompanied the families here over the festive period were not uncontrolled, in fact they were very well behaved. Looking at the numerous reviews received over this period and the large increase in rebookings I can only assume that most people did not share your view. We have recently replaced all of the 300+ chairs and tables in our main cabaret ballroom, not only to improve on the aesthetics of the room, but also to help accommodate our guests that wish to join in with our excellent entertainment. I am personally very in touch with our guests over the Christmas and New Year period and comments such as "the best Christmas ever" and "home from home" were just a few made to me during this period. We strive to accommodate all tastes with adult focused entertainment and dancing on at our other venues across the resort everyday of the festive breaks. I am sorry that you did not make use of them during your stay. Our entertainments team work extremely hard to keep our guests coming back year after year and I am confident they are the best team we have had in my 11 years as a General Manager. I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and hope that if you do choose another venue for your Christmas break this year they provide you with the same genuine warm and welcoming customer service levels that you will have received by us. Kindest regards
