“Needs some updating, but comfortable and food good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2014

I stayed at this hotel as part of an organised trip in January 2014.

Upon arrival, one thing we were immediately aware of was how big the hotel was, with a reasonable sized car park. This also made it a bit of a maze inside - a few signs up could be useful - but we learnt our way from the restaurant to our room fairy quickly. As other guests have reported, there are only stairs if you come in via the car park to get to reception, and the main lift by reception is quite old and a little slow.

The decor in our room was quite dated, but the beds were very comfortable. We were on the road side of the hotel, which was a little noisy as it seemed the window latch didn't quite close the window properly. It seemed to be single glazing as well - an upgrade to double with proper working windows would be a benefit. There was a kettle and tea/coffee in our room and a TV (which we didn't use). A safe would have been good as well but not essential.

We dined in the restaurant every night as part of the package. Service is quick but they do seem very rushed and weren't particularly attentive or friendly. Drinks are a bit of a pain to order as they have separate wine waiters/waitresses so it's a bit of a luck of the draw if you happen to catch one as they go past. Whether this is standard service in the restaurant, I don't know.

The location is good - about a 10 minute walk down a gentle sloping hill to see the sea.

Reception was very friendly - when we arrived at the hotel, we found we didn't have any towels in our room, but after we reported this they were brought up fairly soon after and wasn't an inconvenience.

Overall, the hotel was comfortable but is in need of some serious modernisation. Some efforts have been made to do this - heated towel rail in bathroom, key cards instead of keys, comfortable (new) beds - but the rooms need a good fresh lick of paint, windows checked over for repairs/updates to double glazing, and new carpets. I'd stay here again though.

Very enjoyable 3 night break. Our room was large and spotlessly clean and well appointed The tea and coffee in the room was very welcome..Beds were very comfortable with good quality linen. Meals were good and served promptly, though coffee not so good. Friendly efficient reception staff and polite helpful staff at every turn, even at 2.30am when room key wouldnt work. booked again for next year.

We had a 2 night New Year's Eve break, we had a good seized room which was clean.
The breakfast & evening meals were very good, with the use of the 2 other hotels there was ample entertainment going on.
Staff were pleasant so we're enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Room 355 had a king sized bed.

Further to my last visit to the Derwent Hotel being rather disappointing, we decided to go again over the New Year to join friends. The hotel has much improved since our last visit {Dec1 2012}. The overall interior look now meets expectations, the staff are kind and really friendly and the food quality has really improved. It was a pleasure to be waited upon by such professional young people and our room was really clean and comfortable. I would now have no problem recommending this hotel and look forward to my next visit.

Have stayed here several times, the last time we were disappointed, rooms were looking tired and outdated. As we need a family room, we were pleased to see the room had been redecorated and modern touches have been put in place. As always the food was lovely and portions more than adequate. The facilities are outstanding, with indoor and outdoor pools. The entertainment staff are keen and keep you entertained with a daily timetable. If you do not want to leave the hotel, there is lots on offer, you can even watch people playing indoor bowls. My only complaint would be with the Play area and games zone, this was unfinished and things missing with areas fenced off. It maybe if we return this too has been updated!

2 star not a chance!!! 5 star attention to detail and 5++++ staff. Fantastic food throughout the break, entertainment was so brilliant the entertainment team, and professional act's were so good,The Gala Buffet evening superb. We felt special as did all the guests, something going on all day, excellent swimming pools, on new years day, The Torbay Lions Club put on an afternoon of racing making money for a specially adapted bicycle for an amputee. Enjoyed ourselves so much booked before we left for next new year. Thank you for one of the best New Years breaks we have had for a very long time.
