We have never stayed at the hotel before although we have visited Torbay on any number of occassions. We booked very last minute and were only at the hotel for a couple of days. The facilities available were excellent and clearly there is work in progress to upgrade further, for instance ongoing work at the outdoor pool area which meant that certain areas were taped off. The food was extremely good, with a wide choice available for both adults and children. With a 2 star rating I confess to expecting "schhol dinner" fayre, this was certainly not the case. Breakfasts were particularly good, with everything that you would expect at a higher graded hotel.
The playzone for the kids was excellent and the price for example at the 10 pin bowling was a lot less than at a regular ten pin bowling club. As adults we enjoyed our outing on the indoor bowls rink, which was a first class facility. The indoor pool was never busy but perhaps needs a bit of tlc for instance around the jacuzzi where tiles were coming away and in the changing rooms where a number of the lockers were broken.
The only part of the hotel which lived up to its star rating was the bedroom. It was very basic. For a family of 4 we had a double bed and two singles which pretty much filled the floorspace with just enough room for a single chair. As I said we booked very last minute so maybe we were in one of the less attractive rooms, although the in laws room (a double) was pretty much the same. Having said that it was perfectly clean but very warm at night. We were there for 2 nights only so managed, however if we were there longer then it would simply have not been practicable. We were shown into both a double room at the Carlton and an Apartment there and the standard of those rooms was considerably better. ( no complaints on our part - you pay for what you get!) I would hope that the management will look to upgrade the rooms but given the set up of the original hotel then I suspect that the scope for improvement would be limited.
My Mother in Law who has some mobility issues travelled with us and it has to be said that the hotel is not that "disabled friendly". There are a number of "temporary " ramps throughout the corridors which do the job but don't enhance the look of the hotel much and as another reviewer has said lift access is a problem.
There was a lot of ongoing entertainment and what we saw was very good.
Overall this was extremely good value for money and we look forward to returning to either this or the other linked tlh resorts.
