“Very good value for money.”
Reviewed 7 June 2010

We have never stayed at the hotel before although we have visited Torbay on any number of occassions. We booked very last minute and were only at the hotel for a couple of days. The facilities available were excellent and clearly there is work in progress to upgrade further, for instance ongoing work at the outdoor pool area which meant that certain areas were taped off. The food was extremely good, with a wide choice available for both adults and children. With a 2 star rating I confess to expecting "schhol dinner" fayre, this was certainly not the case. Breakfasts were particularly good, with everything that you would expect at a higher graded hotel.
The playzone for the kids was excellent and the price for example at the 10 pin bowling was a lot less than at a regular ten pin bowling club. As adults we enjoyed our outing on the indoor bowls rink, which was a first class facility. The indoor pool was never busy but perhaps needs a bit of tlc for instance around the jacuzzi where tiles were coming away and in the changing rooms where a number of the lockers were broken.
The only part of the hotel which lived up to its star rating was the bedroom. It was very basic. For a family of 4 we had a double bed and two singles which pretty much filled the floorspace with just enough room for a single chair. As I said we booked very last minute so maybe we were in one of the less attractive rooms, although the in laws room (a double) was pretty much the same. Having said that it was perfectly clean but very warm at night. We were there for 2 nights only so managed, however if we were there longer then it would simply have not been practicable. We were shown into both a double room at the Carlton and an Apartment there and the standard of those rooms was considerably better. ( no complaints on our part - you pay for what you get!) I would hope that the management will look to upgrade the rooms but given the set up of the original hotel then I suspect that the scope for improvement would be limited.
My Mother in Law who has some mobility issues travelled with us and it has to be said that the hotel is not that "disabled friendly". There are a number of "temporary " ramps throughout the corridors which do the job but don't enhance the look of the hotel much and as another reviewer has said lift access is a problem.
There was a lot of ongoing entertainment and what we saw was very good.
Overall this was extremely good value for money and we look forward to returning to either this or the other linked tlh resorts.

Thank you for your review. The Derwent Hotel, one of four hotels on our site remains as a 2* hotel because of some of our basic rooms. These represent approximately 30% of our bedrooms, our remaining 70% of rooms are of a 3* quality. I am glad that you have found that our offering in general is not of a 2* standard. As a family business that has been trading for over 60 years, we continue to invest in both our 3* and 2* hotels on the resort. Investment levels at present are cautious given the climate that we all currently live in. Although investment is continuing with the recent completion of our 100k outside pool project, and 1 million pound investment of our Aztec Bistro, Spa and leisure facilities. Bedroom refurbisment is also a priorty for us. We hope to welcome you back again. Kindest regards

We attended a Boogaloo Blues Weekend at The Derwent. We were very impressed by the quality of the venue itself and the food. This hotel is rated as two star but with a lick of paint could become outstanding. Work is underway to improve the outdoor area and pool but otherwise, it is a good place to spend a weekend, even if it was not for a specific event.
The staff were very helpful and obliging. The only let down is that the carpark is on the roof on two levels and there is no lift to the reception area, making luggage transfer awkward.
However this is a small price to pay for an otherwise enjoyable experience.
We wanted to book for a Turkey and Tinsel weekend but the dates we wanted were sold out, which says it all!

Thank you for your review. I am please to be able to say Boogaloo will do it again. A great time had by all. The Blues bands were brilliant and our teams enjoyed them too. We hope to be able to welcome you again on the next Bogaloo weekend on 20th-23rd May 2011. Kindest regards

Your points regarding our frontage are noted and when investment allows we will be addressing this. As a family owned and operated resort we are committed to continual investment into our property.

we have just returned from our first stay at the Derwent . we were attending a Boogloo Blues w/end and have had a fantastic time. my reason for only giving rooms and sleep a low rating is because we were situated at the front and it was extremly noisy 24hrs a day.
we shall be returning in2011 and i will book a room at the back of the hotel this time.
food was excellent and couldnt have asked for better service from all members of staff.
location is just about perfect , although on a hill it isnt too bad and you can always get the trolley train as it stops directly outside.

Not the best of hotels but good value for money. Good dining room layout but the food was not as good as last year. Service was bad on the last day maybe because everyone was anxious to be on time for the coaches and the waitresses could not cope. Reception staff were very helpful and bar staff were cheerful & friendly as were the staff in the bowling area & the ten pin bowling arena.
On the whole a very enjoyable holiday.

Just back from Derwent. Stayed there many times and never disappointed. All Inclusive Drinks Package was great value and food - as ever - was very good. Staff are all friendly and welcoming. Very disappointed that outdoor pool area was being refurbished. No mention of this when booking and noise from contractors made sitting outside unenjoyable (usually a great place to relax and enjoy the sunshine). They hope to complete the work by the end of May but it appeared to be behind schedule.

Thank you for your review. We have just completed our 100k investment into our outside pool area. This was to meet with new legislation and improve our offering to our guests. We hope to be able to welcome you back on a future occasion. Kindest regards

Check in was quick and efficient, rooms were clean and nicely equipped with all you could need. The food was excellent. Plenty to do day and night and the shows were first class. Did a drinks inclusive break - what more could you ask for - maybe the weather could have been kinder but there was plenty to keep you occupied at the hotel and surrounding area - will definately recommend it and will come again. Many thanks to all the staff - Williams family
