TLH Victoria Hotel

Recently had 4 nights at the Victoria on a Learn to Dance course with Phillip Wyllie. The dancing course was very good and really enjoyable thanks to Phillip and Christine.
The hotel complex has very good facilites with ballroom, swimming pools and and indoor bowling rink. Our room and bathroom was ok but overlooked the front entrance and we were woken in the early hours on 3 nights by people talking loudly just outside the hotel lobby and by cars left with their engines running.
Staff in the hotel were friendly but what lets the place down is the food. Breakfast was good if you overlooked the burnt toast. Evening meals seem to have been prepared well in advance and anything that suffers by standing around keeping warm, such as fish and vegetables were not good. A beef salad arrived smothered in horseradish sauce which had not been requested or on the menu. Desserts with pastry or crumble topping were to be avoided. Choose a cold starter, salad and ice cream to be safe!

On one of my many visits to torquay to see family i decided to try out the Victoria Hotel. BIG MISTAKE! when the guests in the next room arrived back at around midnight i thought they had broken into my room, for they may as well been in my room because i could hear every word they were saying. so beware! do not book room 112 113 114 if you want a good nights sleep. i cant say for sure if the rest of the rooms have a similar problem. jjd

Room Tip: ask about sound proofing

Stayed for 4 nights on a "Holiday & Dance" Ballroom & Latin short break hosted by Lynette Boyce. Excellent dance holiday - lovely ballroom - great tuition.
One of the best things about TLH is the staff - consistantly friendly and helpful. Had a problem with our shower which was fixed within a couple of hours. Magdalena a shining example of what a waitress should be. Reception staff proactive in offering us mattress toppers when we commented that the beds were too firm. Housemaid left the bed how we wanted it (unlike so many other hotels where they will insist on tucking everything in to my annoyance when I then have to untuck it all again!).
Swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room all of a very high standard. Food is well cooked and with a decent choice. For the price this was an excellent holiday.
Small quibbles are * Mattresses too firm but OK with additional topper * Room too warm even though radiator not on * Full cream milk cartons for tea and coffee (surely semi skimmed would be a better choice? I take skimmed so full cream tastes disgusting to me) * Curtains not thick enough to block out light
Big plus points are * Great dancing * Great staff * Good food * Great value for money

Room Tip: Riveria rooms face the sea and therefore are sunnier and quieter.

I have attended at least six salsa weekenders at the above hotel and I have always been very satisfied with the
accommodation provided. It has always been clean and well presented. The staff are very helpful ad provide a
good service.

The breakfasts are very good and the evening meals also, but on a rare occation have dissappointed.
The Aztec Zone is a good area to to unwind and refresh your body with the facilities provided. I always book
an extra night before the weekend to compensate for the long journey and a chance to look around Torquay.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view would be more pleasant.

We stayed here for 1 night when attending an event at the conference centre across the road, and chose the hotel as it was offering a very good rate - if we had paid more then I would have been disappointed. The hotel is in need of a serious update throughout, particularly the bathrooms. The staff are however very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good.

A lovely friendly and warm hotel, although the evening meal leaves a little to be desired. We thought the food this time was definitely slightly below par - although breakfast was very good.

The entertainment provided by KB sounds was exceptional. Also the dancing was very good and Kevin is the main reason for us returning year after year to the Victoria.

Room Tip: Room 114 has a connecting door (usually for families) and so you can hear everything that goes on in...

just spent yet another couple of days at the Victoria and as always was fab .The room was big and comfortable and of course plenty to do . It was a shame the boiler to the swimming pool was broken so the water in one of the pools was cold , but these things happen and no bodies to blame . Will it put me off going again , certainly not , our visits are now in double figures .
