We stayed at The Cary Arms from 4th to 7 September and were greeted with a warm welcome and a glass of bubbly. Tony the assistant manager took our case to the room and Jen the Manager showed us around the terrace and gardens which were lovely. Our room was lovely too, the bed and pillows were so comfortable. The views are amazing and we even saw a pod of dolphins one morning. The food is delicious although there is only one vegetarian option. The location is good in that you are near to Torbay and ferry to Brixham, Dartmouth etc with lots of lovely walks or shops and theatre just as you please. We have always stayed in Torquay in the past but we will definately come back to the Cary Arms and recommend it. All in all a wonderful stay - shame we had to come back to work really !

...and that might help you to imagine the Cary Arms. We caught it on a sunny day in August and it looks great. At first sight inside the impression is of a smart country pub with especially cheery staff. For guests going through to the bedrooms, there's that nice feeling of having landed on your feet: bedrooms are impressive, spotless (especially important when you're by the sea, or is that just me?), large and well equipped, including a small private terrace. There's a rather flash private guests' lounge too, which is fun in a of 'hello sailor' sort of way, including a library into which, for a change, some thought had gone.

The chief selling point is the location, with Babbacombe Bay (if it isn't actually called that it ought to be) more or less by the front door. The Cary Arm's refurbishment has been thought through to some really clever gardening outside and a curvy paths and terraces leading down to a quay. Looking back up at the hotel, it's slightly reminiscent of of a miniature Portmeirion, although I had a vodka after checking in, so you might want to make up your own mind about that.

In the evening there was good food at pretty good gastropub prices. The bar had a mix of diners and drinkers, always a good sign, and afterwards coffee outside by a log fire, with the lights from Teignmouth (?) on the water - pretty dashed romantic actually.

I would recommend the Cary Arms, because in the great lottery that is 'staying at a British Inn or Hotel' sometimes you need to include a guaranteed winner in your itinerary. It's not bargain basement, but I've paid more for less elsewhere.

Our family enjoyed a fabulous 3 night stay at the Cary Arms in August. The location is great, right on the sea, with wonderful views. The staff were very helpful and enthusiastic and even took us out on their boat for the afternoon. The food was excellent and our room was clean, bright and decked out in nautical style, with a balcony overlooking the sea. This is a great place to eat and drink well, relax and take in the sea air and views. We will definitely be back!

My husband and I have just returned from a long weekend at the Cary Arms to celebrate our 5 year anniversary, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having had very mixed experiences at UK hotels in the past (usually bad), and wondering if the cost of the room would really be worth it, we were sold by the website and the friendly response to queries over the phone, and decided to give the UK one last chance for a bank holiday weekend away. How glad we are that we did. .
After a long drive from London, we were welcomed warmly by the assistant manager Tony and offered complimentary drinks, help with our bags and a seat outside to relax whilst we got our bearings. We quickly realised that this great start was to be the norm - the whole weekend was wonderful from start to finish, from the gorgeous room (spotless, mix of traditional and modern, comfortable), lovely food (local, imaginative and simple, always well cooked), to the beautiful surroundings (maximised by the design of the internal and external layouts). Whether having lunch out on the sun terrace enjoying the fabulous views or dinner inside by the fire when the weather was cool, there wasn't a bad spot to be! And the 'extras' which were part of the service - drinks on the house, a boat trip round the bay, papers and dinner booked without needing to ask - it all helped to make us feel as welcome as if we were statying with friends or family, and not a paying guest!! Thank you to Jen and all the Cary Arms team for a lovely weekend, we are so glad we decided not to go abroad and explore south Devon instead. We will defintely be back, and will tell all of our friends and family about you, so keep up the good work!.

We stayed at The Cary Arms for a whole week and it was fantastic. Above all else, the customer service is extremely good, with very friendly staff and efficient service. There is a real sense of teamwork and pride amongst the people that work here. Our room was fantastic with windows looking out to the sea and a small terrace. This was one of the dog friendly rooms, and dog friendly is what we experienced at every turn. Our dog was pampered as much as we were, although he couldn't make use of the Spa room and the lovely massages and facials on offer there!! The food was very good (though the menu did not vary much during our stay, but I think this will change going forward). Yes, it is quite pricey, but if you want great service, a great location and atmosphere and want to treat yourselves, this is the place for you. We'll be going back, that's for sure.
