Reviewed 24 April 2013

just returned after a visit 20th april to 24th very nice room clean and tidy new beds very comfy staff all friendly, food good, quick service by our waiter kelvin very nice guy hotel overall good only downfall is you sit all the same table you had your meal at for the bingo, ouiz entertainment, and the chairs are very uncomfortable to sit on all night several people left the hall to go and sit in the lounge i think more people would stay if seating was more comfortable

Hello again and thanks for posting a lovely review of the Devonshire Hotel, it is very important to us to offer great value for money, we understand value for money is what our guests think is very important when choosing a hotel, your may not get items you get with a 4 star hotel, but the package we offer included transport to and from your area, dinner bed and breakfast, tea and coffee in the rooms, 70 channel on the tv, a full package of entertainment each night, and if that wasnt enough we even pay the VAT at 20%. value for money, more like a bargin.

see you again

Stayed at this Hotel and wish I hadn't.
Although it was fairly clean there was a dirty chair in the bedroom which really put me off. It is very basic , dated and really not worth the money when you compare with others.
We needed to get up early and basically didn't get a good sleep due to noise levels, doors banging and people talking really loud with no regard for others (I suppose this could happen at any hotel and not the hotels fault really) . The reception staff where nice and helpful.
The rooms are clean(apart from chair) basic furniture, tiny TV, clean comfy but firm bed , only one pillow each and they where as flat as a pancake, had to double them over by folding in half to feel like you had a pillow. Room was nice and warm but just lacked in the cozy department. It felt like we where staying in a homeless hostel and not a hotel.
The hotel itself was probably beautiful once upon a time and it has nice view on the grounds but it is a little eerie and reminded me of something out of the 30's but not in vintage chic boutique way ..more vintage tragic ...Its a big hotel so maybe there are other sides to it that are modern with nicer rooms, who knows?
I really chose the hotel for location and free parking but thinking on I should have just gone somewhere nicer for the same price range and paid extra for parking
I wouldn't stay again and I wouldn't recommend

Location - quite good and quiet. Rooms - tired and poorly equipped, no toiletries, no hairdryer, no 'fridge, shower unpredictable. Bed - lumpy and resembling a relief map of the Alps. However it is the catering which is the worst part. Everything is obviously priced to the penny. When I saw on the menu at dinner that fruit juice was a starter I realised that this was not going to be a culinary treat. Pate the size of a stamp (and about as tasty), eggs tiny and hard, veg cooked to death, industrial grade sausages, lurid coloured jam, the nastiest (instant) coffee I have ever tried etc. etc. Dinner frequently interrupted by announcements. School dinners were delicious compared to this restaurant. But......the price was very low. The staff worked hard and were always friendly. You get what you pay for but I wish I had paid a bit more.

We had our 2nd holiday staying at this hotel, and like the !st time it was excellent.
Although the weather was cold,we still enjoyed ourselves. The food was great, our waiter Artur was very attentive & again all the entertainment was very good.Simon was brilliant as usual, even though i think he needs some new jokes!
We would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel, which we hope to do in september.Again well done Nigel & all the staff. See you in a few months.
Regards
Lionel & Eileen Silverman

Very friendly, helpful and professional staff. Rooms very clean with TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Our waitress was a real gem making sure that our 4 year old granddaughter was well catered for. Food was very good with a choice of menu. There was entertainment every evening or you could just relax in the bar of television room. A very good experience and would go again.

Having stayed at all but Eastbourne My husband and myself we would try what is suppose to be the flagship of the company. If I had come to Torquay first I would never have tried Daishs again.I have visited Barrowfields in Newquay over 30 times and this hotel is a far better place. Rooms are spacious, clean and the food is much nicer, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Back to Devonshire, the room we were given seemed as if we were at Blackpool with the sink in the bedroom and very small toilet and shower room.Went back to recieption to be told there were no more rooms and in otherwords just have to put up with it.
Toilet would not flush properly when reported was told to take top off cistern and push ballcock down .Wardrobe doors would not shut niether would the cupboards again told they would not do anything with it as the room was waiting to be refurbished.
Then there was the so called trip ( Buckfast Abbey, Marble place and Treago Mills ) what a farce this turned out to be. Marble place was shut we were informed when we got on the coach,so off we set to the Abbey that too was shut till 12 o clock service in the Abbey so was left out in the cold till shops opened then we had half an hour before we had to be back on the coach. Next stop Treago Mills we thought we got there and that was SHUT driver asked if we wanted to go to Paignton about 12 people said yes (there was a full coach ) so off we went even though we planned to go next day !!! Was told we would get refund but took us 2 days to have a word with the disappearing manager Nigel before we managed to get something others had nothing. So beware of trips.
Will possible go again if given a free holiday but would have to have a long hard think about it first.
All in all felt as if we were fobbed off with everything we complained about.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a proper bathroom !!!!!

Dear Guest, i am sorry your stay did not meet your expectation, room 8 was the next room inline to be refurbished, your toilet was checked twice and was not found to be faulty as you discribed, the wardrobe door did need a new catch on it apart from that it was old but clean and ok. the day tour was a let down as it was Easter Sunday and places were shut so a lession learnt on that, but guests including yourself were refunded 50% which you were happy to take at the time, (didnt have any problems finding me than).guests were asked to come and get the refund but you were kind enough to inform them for me that a refund was on offer so thank you for that, it was a shame you let the room issue spoil your holiday when many other guest who had used this room prior found no issue apart from the fact it was ready for an update which has now been done, pictures to follow.
as we spoke at the time i had offered a discount on the next holiday and a newly refurbished room. i aware your call.

Nigel.

The Devonshire is situated in a quiet and respectable area of Torquay, close to the coastal footpath and five minutes walk from the harbour. For a budget hotel, the package is good value for money and the manager, Nigel, is always willing to cater for individual needs, such as my special diet. That is why I returned for another visit. He also came all the way to my room in the annexe to show me how to adjust the shower. The dining and reception staff were also friendly and helpful.

My room upstairs in the annexe was clean and the en suite facilities were good, though the shower instructions were not clear. I could adjust the radiator. It should have been quiet at night - there were notices asking guest to be quiet after 10 pm - but I had noisy neighbours on one side.

I didn't sample the entertainment in the evenings or go on the outings, as I prefer to arrange my own. I understand, however, that the trip to Trago Mills and Buckfast Abbey was poorly planned, as both attractions were closed on Easter Sunday. So the guests returned disappointed.

Coach transport to the hotel went smoothly, but on the return trip we had a relief driver who didn't know the coach - the driver was off sick. He drove for three hours before stopping for a comfort break only. Someone complained and he agreed to allow a lunch stop and catch a later ferry to the Isle of Wight. But when he tried to move off, the automatic door mechanism wouldn't work. Eventually he took it to a specialist firm he knew a few miles away and they soon fixed it. So well done to him for keeping calm in a crisis.
