“Excellent value for a bargain break - but beware of the hill!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2013

Well as the title says you certainly get good value for your money at The Devonshire with pleasant friendly staff, clean rooms & comfortable beds. The actual bedrooms can vary greatly in size & comfort, so it is very much down to luck or previous visits on how you end up. Our particular room had the ensuite inside the bedroom with a sliding door that was aprox 3 feet from my head when I was in bed! Whilst it was an excellent walk in shower, having no window in there meant you had to have the light/extractor fan on everytime you used it - it was like walking into a lift at Debenhams.

Now speaking about Debenhams that is where you catch the bus back up "heart attack hill" to the hotel. I read in one review about "the frequent bus service" - well, in the Midlands where we live, frequent means 8-10 mins, in Torbay it is every 40mns with the last bus about 6.0pm & no service on Sunday! Most services are run by Stagecoach in the Torquay area but the firm that runs this service must have the smallest buses I have ever seen! I can understand in the Winter period this level of service but in the summer months (July/August) it should be improved.

Now this is supposed to be a hotel review, but you can see how other things can effect your judgement on how you viewed a holiday & how it may effect your return. Whilst The Devonshire scored well on most counts such as the tea/coffee facilities, they provide a lovely little tea pot & plenty of milk bless 'em, on the other hand we did not have a hair dryer. On entering our room on arrival we found a damaged toilet seat which we reported on our way to dinner & by the time we had returned it was changed - wonderful. The meals were of a good choice except the fish which a few people said was tasteless, & altho' I never had one the full English breakfast looked a little tired - I can recommend the poached eggs instead. The Hotel bar was excellent with reasonable prices & good opening hours & tucked away for a bit of piece & quiet from the bingo brigade. So all in all I would recommend this hotel for value, cleanliness & comfort - BUT being at the top of a very steep hill with such a limited bus service to get back just made it a no go for my wife & I. So whilst Newquay & Bournemouth passed with flying colours, this one did not due to the location. Our next target is Eastbourne as so many people have spoken so highly of it & the wonderful location with no buses or taxis required! My last words of thanks goes to Monica for waiting on our table so well during our stay & "Max Wall" the barman - one of the quietest I've ever met.

Room Tip: Keep away from the annexe it looks a little unloved. Rooms over the dining room face towards the sea...

hello again and thank you for your review, it should be noted that the Devonshire sits in one of the best parts of torquay, if you wanted to be on the flat then Belgrave Road may suit you better, BUT this road is not a nice part of town there are lots of bedsits and closed Hotels. so you are better off in daddyhole and lincoines area of torquay were all the grand properties sit like the Devonshire. lets not forget 2 buses per hour and if you are able only 15 minute walk with most guest do.
thank you again and we hope you will be back.

We were self-drive and were with my brother and his wife. There is plenty of parking and a bus stop straight outside the hotel. The hotel was very clean and our bed was very comfortable. The only concern was with frayed towels - one had a large hole in it - not what I would have expected. This is our second Daish's hotel and we are going to have to try the rest- already booked for the Isle of Wight. Food was varied and well prepared and the waiting staff were very pleasant. Indeed all the Staff were. The entertainment was varied with an exceptional performance from Andy Oakley. Katy Mae was very good and we enjoyed Karl Lewis. We shall return

Booked a 4 night break, half board in the Devonshire Hotel Torquay last min deal from e - bay. Hotel manager Nigel was fantastic, organised and very attentive toward his clientèle. The hotel was fully booked, during breakfast and evening meal the service flowed, as nothing was too much trouble. Room clean and tidy with everything one would require for a short break. Entertainment was also provided and enjoyed the evenings with friends we made on arriving. Well situated for the town, only 5 mins down the hill and enjoyed evening walks when the weather permitted.

The 'Devonshire' hotel in Torquay is the first one of 'Daish's' holiday hotels that we've tried and we thought it was good value for money. The hotel was clean and tidy and the food was good. They provided breakfast, dinner and entertainment as part of the package and we enjoyed it.
The staff were friendly and helpful and our room was equipped with everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and the view was of the 'English Riviera', although we DID have the the room on the 2nd floor, in what they called the "tower". We thought the view was exactly what you "would expect to see from a Torquay hotel window"!

Room Tip: If you can get it, the room at the top - in the "tower". But there is only one. All the ro...

We have been to the Devonshire several times and always receive a warm welcome. We find
the rooms clean and well furnished. We always ask for the lodge where we feel it is more like
home. Excellent friendly staff where nothing is too much trouble and waiters serve you with a
smile. The hotel is situated on a hill but proves no trouble as there is frequent bus service
to the town at the bottom (every ten minuets). A nice evening stroll to the headland is about eight
minuets away to walk off the substantial evening meal. The menus at the Devonshire we found
to be varied well presented and you can always ask for more when they are happy to oblige.
Really cannot praise them enough from Manager to staff.

Room Tip: We like The Lodge as we find it quiet and good size rooms.

This hotel has seen better days it is very very tired & run down. Room 39 is very small 1 single bed, 1 wardrobe ( but you can only open 1 door of it at a time) it is positioned right next to the bed, 1 sink & 1 chest of draws with paint coming of it. Toilet & shower in what can only be described as a sliding door wardrobe. Room is very tatty. Room measures about 8 X 6. Radiator will not turn off so window needs to be open all the time but over looks noisy bus park. Room 36 is also a single room but slightly bigger has a chair (luxury). Paid extra for the single room.
This 6 day holiday was booked as a package tour which included bus to & from hotel with Daish;s Travel of which this hotel is their HQ;s.
Lots of stairs not good for disabled. 1 lift but to one side of hotel.
Not enough staff always waiting for someone to come to reception
Food not bad waitresses try hard. Not big meals.
Hotel is situated at the top of a very steep hill but there is service buses about every hour.
